i'm going to be buying an ar-15 soon and really am not in the loop as far as which would be the better rifle.
having previously owned a bushmaster varminter and loving everything about it, i will be getting either a bushmaster predator[camo] or a remington R-15. they look basically the same.
my understanding is...the R-15 has a lighter barrel. is this the only difference in the two ?
the bushmaster is priced about $100 more but i'd rather pay it and have the heavier barrel.

Bushmasters aren't anything special, from a mechanical standpoint… They're a good, middle of the road rifle (much like mine, below), and are better than an Olympic, and maybe a DPMS (if you believe everything you read on ARFCOM)... They're not like a Colt, or a BCM, or an LMT or anything (Mil-spec everything, 100% HP/MPI tested, etc.)... That Bushmaster has an MSRP of $1350… Just as point of reference: I built this for ~$780 (minus sling, mag, and optics): It's a: - J&T Bull Barrel kit rifle, with a 24", 1:8, 0.910" floated barrel. They come in 16, 20, 22, and 24", in 1:8 or 1:10 twist, stainless barrels, and can be coated black for $50 extra, and fluted for an extra charge, as well. They are a real 5.56 chamber, not a Wylde like the Bushy or a .223... The brand of barrel on mine is DSA, and with my 75gr BTHP reloads, it's a 0.6 MOA rifle (10 rounds) - $600 with the sling swivel in the bottom of the handguard jtdistributing.net/store/more_k_bbk.html- Mega Machine stripped lower - $130 (though you can use a $90 lower and get the same result) - Bill Springfield 3# trigger - $45, though it's $54 now (you send him your stock trigger parts and he machines them) www.triggerwork.net/ar15s.htmlTo make it fair, add these to make it even with the full rifle: - 5-rd Mag - ~$12 - Hard Case - ~$30 So you can build basically the same thing for just shy of $800 The kit can be installed with mostly normal tools (though I got a $12 set of roll pin punches). The upper already comes assembled and headspaced, so you just have to put the parts in the lower, and put the stock on… Mike

Good advice by barton 174. Shop around a LOT before spending your money. AR-15 components are dropping in price almost daily it seems. You can easily get a top quality rifle for under $1000. Here's one "for instance" deal lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/cdnn/Special.jpg
