I built a small elevated vegetable garden in our backyard. When we put dirt in it we mixed miracle grow potting soil, peat moss, and composted manure. Well suddenly on top of all the stuff we DID plant, we also ended up with these 'volunteers'!! Does anyone have any idea what they are and/OR (more importantly!) are they dangerous/toxic?! I think japanese Parasols coprinus plicatilis, not edible AND we have a winner!! ;D ("Toadstools" not so much.) You are absolutely correct that these (or at least SOME of these!) are coprinus plicatilis....however I believe that some of them are different varieties of 'ink caps' - however they ARE edible (NOT that I will be trying them! ). If you do not harvest them by about 10:00am or 11:00 then they turn into a big glob of black goo !!! Apparently other than that they are edible, but not necessarily 'good'.

One risks facing a Liver Transplant (or death) when they go out and eat unknown Mushrooms or any Fungus type plants. You MUST know your Mushrooms before eating them!!

Well yes & no...it depends ENTIRELY on the type of mushroom & therefore the type of toxins. Some affect the liver, some the kidneys & others heart/lungs. Other than that you are correct...and why I will ONLY eat morels & puffballs! While these are *apparently* edible....I certainly will not be 'sampling' them!! My biggest concern was them being in such close proximity to my vegetables.
