Sitting on the porch swing Monday chatting with the wife when I heard a quail in our back yard. Since I have bought the place my goal has been to improve it for small game like rabbits and quail to give my kids some fun hunting grounds. I have not heard a quail in 1.5 years here so this was pretty exciting. It really got me motivated to do some hard core trapping and I will continue to improve the habitat.

good to hear! quail are gettin fewer and farther between around here, and I dont see it ever improving much. Farmers are doing there darndest to eliminate what few fencerows we have left, every patch of woods now has a house or three in it...and nobody seams to care about small game anymore

DUFF,now the secret is to keep it, the No.1 very most important thing I have done is KILL FESCUE first and formost, and then edge feathering. this year I had a bird calling where I had killed fescue last year and cut trees this year the combination seems to have been the ticket it is next to 5 acres of wsg. but if you do nothing else Kill Fescue

Yea, it has been on my to do list...My neighbor used my back field as a log yard this spring/early summer so I have a few acres next to the woods that are bare dirt right now. The plan is to put that in some type of habitat since it is already bare. The other fields I burnt a few sections of next to the woods but didn't plant anything just wanted to see what pops up. I'd say in about 5 years when my kids will really be getting into the hunting (hopefully) we should have game a plenty. Tons of rabbits already just need to nock back the varmits a bit and continue improving the available habitat.

in the skid yard disc it late and throw down some Illionois bundle flower and partridge peas you will have rag weed come up in the spring also the no.1 quail food. I did that this year I was real pleased with the results I dont know if you have heard it or not but quail are used as an indicator species . If you have them things are good for about everything.

Cool, I don't know a whole lot about quail other then I have bumped them up a few times and loved it when I would get some while rabbit hunting. Tasty little critters! I need to increase my knowledge on habitat for quail so any help is appreciated.
Thanks, Ryan
