The first few birds have been mating for some time now. I caught these two going at it in front of my blind a few days ago. You have to look real close to see the hen but she is there .

Actually to comment on the season being late this year, the birds have been breeding for about a month now, pre some of the pro staff turkey hunters I have spoken with. The it takes a fwe days for the eggs to fertilize before they can be laidand then 28 days of incubation. The hen also has the ability to store the sperm for a long period and can actually have two sets of poults a season. They make the season later because the hens get bred earlier, but the toms are still trying until almost June. This is at least my best attempt to answer the question. If someone has any other info, put it up, I am always open for new info and trivia. Eric

The less hens we have to compete with, the better.

Lt.
You are right about the storing of sperm and the process for laying eggs.
I also believe that as long as the toms are hot, I like having fewer hens to compete with.
