The first two turkeys I ever killed were bearded hens. I killed them in consecutive years. Both had beards that were fairly thick (about twice as thick as the one pictured above) and both were better than 8 inches long. They fell in the same field not 30 yards apart. Now what are the odds of that?!?

By the way, the first of those hens I killed had a fully developed egg still inside her. When we cleaned her, we saved the egg and ate it too. Pretty neat!

Actually, I wouldn't kill one now. But as a first and second year turkey hunter a few years back, anything with a beard was going down.
Actually, as I think back, I didn't even realize the first one was a hen until afterwards.

We had a bearded hen on our property for 3 or 4 years. She had about an 8 inch beard and real thin. She was with a gobbler I killed 2 years ago. I've heard about 1 in 20 hens have a beard but it sure doesn't seem like that many. Personally I've seen about a 1/2 dozen.

Any turkey with a beard is legal game as far as I know deerdude That is a fact. Any turkey with a visable beard is a legal bird. It makes no distinction between male of female in this regard.
