2009 State Park Reduction EffortSee attached for the full report...Seventeen state parks required deer reductions in 2009. A total of 1,334 deer were harvested with 4,994 hunter efforts and 4,475 applicants drawn for two, 2-day reductions. Though the 2009 harvest was 134 deer less than 2008, the total acreage of parks in 2009 was 32% less than the year before. Poor weather prevailed at a majority of parks during the early hunt and expanses of standing corn remained adjacent to many properties throughout both hunts. Mean no-show of drawn participants remains steady at 47%. Attachments:![](//storage.proboards.com/1336408/thumbnailer/.jpg)

Access to hunting areas is supposed to be a great problem in this state, yet 47% of the drawn applicants are no shows? What's the real story on this one?

I like the Versailles SP hunt because it is pretty much in my back yard. In fact you can hear the guns booming from Main Street!!! LOL There is no excuse for not showing up to hunt on the first day of the hunt unless it is a darn good one, kids are sick, I'm sick enough to die, the old lady got hit by a bus, etc, etc. But those of us who have hunted the parks for years know that the second day is pretty much a waste of time, and the number of deer killed is pretty low. I still hunt the second day, but with far less enthusiasm as the first day. When the guns start going off the deer scatter pretty quick and on to greener, safer pastures. The second round of hunts always produces fewer deer because they have already been hunted and thinned out once, so the yearlings and dumb ones are pretty well gone. The best park hunt dates are the Monday and Tuesday after opening weekend of gun season when moist of the deer will still be on park property or pushed on to it from private ground. Maybe the DNR should put a restriction on no-show/no-attempt to call hunters and automatically reject their applications for a couple of years. The SP's are supposed to have a list of hunters to call to replace no-shows, but I have never talked to anyone or heard of anyone that has been called.

Schoolmaster is my friend and a member on here. He called the SP and canceled his hunt because his plans changed and he couldn't go. The woman thanked him and said she would contact the next person in line.
Ive drawn the state park hunts the last 8-9 years and agree with old3arrowst. The first day is always the best but Ive killed deer the second day many times. Ive not shown up the second day a few times because of bad weather, ice storm, all day rain and one snow storm. I love to hunt but not in foul weather. Ive found that the second day usually about half of the hunters don't show. h.h.
