This is my ninth season turkey hunting. A buddy of mine who is a county deputy took me for the first time. I killed a bird opening morning that year and have been hooked since. I've hunted IN, SD, FL and TN, and will be driving to TX tomorrow. In 8 years I've killed 19 birds, all free-lanced (no guides), 2 of which were bow kills and 1 with a muzzle-loading shotgun. The only bird I haven't called in for myself was my first. Since then I have introduced about 6 people to the sport and called their firsts in for them. 5 of those are now serious turkey hunters. My biggest bird was a 24lb. Merriams with a 10 inch beard and 1 3/8" hooks. He's still strutting from the roost in my office! I've got 2 young daughters that I can't wait to take in a coupla years.

i taught myself from TV, DVDs and in the woods. this is my fourth year and Ive yet to kill one. two years ago i shot a nice tom with a 20 ga @30yds with heavyshot #6. he flopped around for a few seconds and i thought he was dead. all of a sudden he took off on the wing and before i could get the gun up, he was gone. last year i had terrible weather, sleeted on me 4 times the first day of my hunt. birds would not gobble but i still had two with in 70 yds. all my hunting has been on the local reservoir threw the draw. there are no turkeys on my property yet. I'm going south to HNF or close-by since i didn't get drawn, hopefully this year i will score. h.h.

I got started when Hal Wolford (outdoorsman and TV announcer) was my next door neighbor. Hal was one of the very first hunters to ever kill a turkey in Indiana and he was my hero.
That sparked my interest and I picked his brain all I could.
There were a few magazines back then that had a few turkey articles in them, but no films and certainly no videos.
That was at least 25 years ago, maybe more.
I killed my first bird in Missouri about 20 years ago.
I've gotten about 10 since then. The last one with a crossbow, which was neat.
I like hunting them, but numero uno on my list is whitetail deer......

I started when I lived in Pennsylvania after I got out of the Army 1975 and been self taught. Really I should say taught by the very best, the turkeys themselves. I killed one the first morning out. Had three old tomes come strutting down off the side of the mountain and shot the one leading the pack. It has been on my wall since. I thought there was nothing to this turkey hunting but have been very educated since. All my turkey hunting has been on public grounds but that's really no excuse for not killing more than what I have. Turkey hunting was my passion until I started waterfowling.

Something I have always wanted to do. I am teaching myself through reading, videos and a good friend has helped me Carl Drake. No birds yet, second year. Eric My tale is similar to this one , I'm largely self taught , though I've learned many of the finer points from forums like this one . This will be my third year , no gobblers bagged as yet .

Just keep with it guys. Turkey hunting has more highs and lows than about any kind of hunting. One morning, they might not want anything to do with you, maybe for a coupla days. Then one day you might do the same thing you've been doing all along, and the same birds that have been giving fits come in on a string and it's over before you know it!

A buddy I work with got me started. Taught me the basics and I've learned the rest from reading mags and watching videos. The first year I went out he was calling for me and I missed one. This will be my 4th year and I'm 2 for 3. It's kind of funny because I called 2 birds in for the same buddy last year. He passed on the first one because it had no beard, but had mature tail feathers. The same morning about an hour later he ended up getting one. Had 2 come in to my Mini Master box call and he shot it at 15 steps. My wife will never forgive him for getting me in to this fine sport.

A guy I worked with in 1993 got me started hunting turkey. 1993 was the first year for hunting turkey in Indiana, so I guess that'd be 12 years.I laughed when my buddy asked me to go becuase I always hunted Whitetails with a bow and it seemed like turkeys wouldn't be much of a challange...Boy was I wrong! Now I can say turkey hunting is probably my favorite hunting of all. I've been lucky to have taken a bird every year except the first year I hunted. They were all Easterns and taken in Indiana. This year however I'm headed to Oklahoma, next week, in fact, it will be my first venture outside Indiana for turkey. Gonna try and get a Rio. Next year I might try Nebraska for a Merriam and then Florida(Good Lord Willing)...Ridgerunner

Once I decided to start hunting them, it was Turkeyscout who gave me video's and took me on my first turkey hunt. I've had the fever since I heard the first Gobble.

what got me started..................
interested in hunting springtime...........so that naturally became a interest after i got into hunting seriously.
to date ive only bowhunted.
i will be going on year 4 or 5 with no success to date.
last year was a big "almost"...............with a lot of "firsts"
-first time gobblers started responding to calls. -first time actually hearing some shock gobbles up close (that one will give ya goosebumps) -first time having a tom come in on my setup (i blew it with moving at the wrong time)
this spring should be great !

Self taught until last year hooked up with a buddy in Missouri and learned more in 4 days with him than the 10 or so years I hunted here. Hard to learn anything when you only get to hunt until noon about 4 days out of the season.
