Hi All - I'm a new hunter and my parents just purchased some land in Hamilton County. They're wanting to see deer so I put out a salt lick and a mineral block for them. Unfortunately they're not showing much interest. I've got a trail cam on the licks and only snapped 3 pictures in a 4 weeks period. (one was a tiny tiny buck first we've seen on the property).
In any event, before season starts I'd like to put some corn out to see if that will draw them. I don't hunt the land much but my parents do like the sereneity of watching deer. To get to my point, where can I buy big bags of corn? 50lbs? Do they sell it at tractor supply?

Your better-off using corn on the cob for deer. It helps keep the smaller critters from eating-up the loose kernals.
Your local feed mill will have corn.

And buy your salt in the granulated form [40/50 lb. sacks] and make a natural salt lick by using a shovel, turning the ground over in a 3 foot circle and pouring the salt over it.

better not hunt the land at all if ya go that route.
It could be as simple as the location where you have the blocks. Are they in the woods in cover, or out in the open?
as for corn, you can get it at any TSC, Orshielns, Rural King etc., usually cheaper if you have a grain elevator/mill nearby

It takes a while for the deer to start using the mineral licks much. IMO anyway.
3-4 weeks isn't long enough to get discouraged.
Try some apples. There should be LOTS of transparent apples available now that people won't mind you gathering up from under apple trees.

I started my salt lick in an area where there were deer present. It started out at three feet wide a few years ago, deer tracks in it after 3 days, it is now 6 feet wide and a foot deep. 50 lbs. of "mixing" NaCl at the 1st of March, and 50 lbs. of Mineral NaCl in early winter [after the Big Game season is way over] to compensate for the leeching that occurs.

Thanks all. I'll try tractor supply this afternoon. I think the recent flooding took my salt block away, bummer. I plan on picking up granulated water softener salt and some corn.
All bait and affected soil will be removed long before season starts.

Try some LUCKY BUCK deer mineral/attractant, or some apples. Vanilla extract works well too. The scent helps them to find site. Once they have found it they'll usually be regulars.

While you are at TSC just buy a bag of Trace Mineral Salt.
It is brown and granulated.
Work up the soil and mix it in.
The deer will find it..

I plan on picking up granulated water softener salt Be careful using softener salt. If it has iron remover in it deer eating it can become anemic or even die!

TSC has Buck Jam in a gallon jug for about $7. My first time using it this year, At my first cam site I had 17 pics in 4 days, at the second site over 1 jug I had 79 after 3 days. I pulled the card on the second site and replaced it and had 40 more pics after 3 days. I have been really impressed with the results from a gallon jug of liquid.

Deer are hittin the soybeans hard right now, if you have any fields around your place, But a buddy of mine uses Buck Jam as he has feeder up in his woods right now and has some great deer on his property, but doesnt allow any hunting, Just like to watch them, He had a 12 pointer last year that would score in the 150's, i begged him to let me hunt his other woods....

The bucks are hitting the bean fields right now, forgetting where the article is, and 5 will get you 10 that down in the SE part of the state where I hunt, the landowners are keeping rifles in their trucks to cut down on the crop loss.

I always wonder how many B/C Bucks are lost to pouchers? We found a Deer skull this Spring that would probably score in the 140's Its a Dam shame people do this, But with Budget cuts Iam sure CO's have to cover several Hundred square Miles.

This is a much better option in my opinion than pure salt. Deer do not really need that much salt where as they can always use more of other minerals. Besides you can always sweeten the mineral with a little bit of salt if you prefer. Ear corn works well for mice, chipmunks and birds but where I hunt the fox squirrels and raccoons aprreciate having it in convenient to carry ear form. ;D
