I don't think locator calls (owls, crows, peacocks, duck, goose, coyote howler, hawk, truck door slamming) wise up too many birds.. Calling them in with yelps, cuts and clucks will though..

Go to one of the draw reservoirs the next four weeks and listen, especially on the weekend. Every truck you see will stop and some idiot will get out and blow a crow call or owl hooter. Very few if any turkeys will respond to a locater call by the time the season opens there. h.h.

I've used locator call for years on private ground during preseason with no adverse affects! Great way to locate birds (when they respond) without trompin' around all over the woods. I've seen lots of guys like hornharvester mentioned that drive around and blow their crow and owl calls, as well as turkey calls. Another reason to get as far off the road as possible when on public ground.

My wife and I sat in my blind Saturday. We had 3 birds gobbling and coming to a field we where at. I used crow call on them. They would gobble about every other time I used it. I did it about 6 times in an hours time.
They ended up 15 yards in front of us and gave us a show for 30 minutes.

I had a similar experience the other day , I was checking/conditioning my friction calls and other gear and chanced to give a crow call when I heard an answering gobble from the woods next door . I gave a few clucks on a crystal and got another reply . The replies kept getting closer and sounded increasingly like more than one bird . Finally I saw them , at least 2 gobblers , very possibly the grey phase hen we saw last year , and what was likely another hen . The gobblers strutted and fanned just 20 yards from me as the others milled about looking for the "strange hen" .
