Got one out of the clamps this morning myself. That ceramic is great stuff.

I agree the surface shouldn't contact the wood. I use 2" Quick-Grip clamps, a ratchet clamp, and a wood disc against the surface with Goop for a glue. It would take a LOT of force to squeeze the glue out of the joint. Ones I have dismantled show a good glue bed.
I tried purple heart, osage and rosewood strikers on the ceramic. All seem to work well. Looks like the harder woods will be the way to go.
