Anyone noticed a species preference for roosting trees?
I was doing a little scouting yesterday in a new-to-me woods and found a lot of evidence of roosting in a three-tree sycamore clump, with another roost sycamore a few yards away. I found a completely different, less used, roosting site that had 1 sycamore and two walnuts.
I realize that any species preference will be dependant on what is available, but if they are given adequate choice, what will they choose?

The turks that have been roosting next door to me don't seem to have a preference , sometimes the roost in maples , sometimes sycamores .

One area I hunt they prefer the ridgetop mature White Oaks & the other area they prefer a large stand of mature Yellow Pine on the lower ridgetop flats.

hey danf,my experience is that the biggest gobbler in the area will go to sycamore tree, especially if that big sycamore is close to a field, a creek and maybe a hen. i flushed a many big boys at first lite because of not entering the area right. then you feel like i messed up my whole morning, my suggestion would be to look for where he"ll be at sunrise instead of take off time.this will require scouting earily in the morning with binoculars. remember you can call these criters a long way without going to there roosting sites and bumpping them. good luck turkey scout

I haven't noticed a particular preference at our place unless it is windy, then they go for the pines. Other than that, it seems like any ridge will do.
