With a jake decoy Just curious if this is hype or if it happens a good bit. I know of 1 instance where a longbeard spooked at the sight of my jake dummy. How about you guys?

hey hoosier, i"ve got busted a many times, but it"s usually because i moved, those owen county gobblers do not like that! you could use a couple of hen decoys and forget the jake and still be successful.just a thought. good luck turkey scout

How' doo 'Scout! You are right about Owen county birds being pretty sharp. Heck, they're wiley anywhere you find them! I have a friend that swears he will NEVER use a jake decoy again as it has blown a lot of set-ups for him. At the same time he says that the biggest toms he has shot have ALL come into a jake decoy (kind of a boss gobbler thing I guess). So, I am up in the air as to strategy in a few weeks. Best of luck around P'burg. Hoosier.

I was in Missouri one year and had a jake and 2 hen decoys set out. I was set up on a hay field and been there for a while and nothing was happening, but way back behind me there was a bird just hammerin. So I picked up the two hen decoys and left the jake and took off after the bird behind me. When I got back to the hay field to get my other decoy ther was a jake about 5 steps from the decoy just strutting back and forth. I set there and watched him for a good 20 minutes before he realized the decoy didn't want to fight. There's no telling how long he had been there before I got back.

I've never SEEN one spook at the sight of the jake, but who knows.... I've always had decent luck with a jake and 2 hens. I generally just use the hens though, simply because I've found that a gobbler will usually come in fast to the jake if he wants to fight, I prefer the gobbler to see the hens, and strut into range. Much more exciting that way.
