My son and I hunted hard for the past 3 days with horrible luck. The birds were just not gobbling, wed we heard 4 birds gobble before fly down way off but nothing close. We resorted to blind hunting the remainder of the day after not striking any up with the crow call. Day two was more of the same but worse it was raining and after 7 years of hunting this property it was the first that I did not hear 1 gobble on roost! We did spot 2 big toms in a field but boogered them while trying to close in. We circled the hardwoods they entered and had them working only to spook a hen and have her scare them off. At the end of Thursday my walk counter on the cell phone said 6.3 miles! This morning was more rain and minimal gobbles, 4 birds on roost in the general area. I headed to the field we had seen the 2 toms in the day before and set up blind. The toms appeared across the field chasing 5 hens and ignoring my calls and my dekes. After watching them for an hour they disappeared in the pouring rain. Another hour as I sat soaking wet the 2 came back out and started acroos the field 200 yds to my left I had enough of watching and decided to put on a good ole fashion Navajo belly crawl down a deep creek. I went in up to my waist wallet and all, crawled up a steep bank and made a 20 yd shot on a 24.4 lbs gobbler! Man I am glad to be home and dry.
