Dad and I where hunting the same 35 acre field. He was on one side and I was on the other. We had 2 birds gobbling to my left. The where probably roosted around 200 yards away. A gobbler and 4 hens entered the field on Dads side. I had a perfect seat to watch it all unfold. Couple of the hens feed to Dads decoys while the gobbler and 2 hens didn't make it all the way there. The gobbler was within 35 yards but Dad couldn't see him because of the rise in front of him. Finally they all broke away and feed my way. The hens made it to my setup 1st. When the gobbler saw my "stuffer" he came quickly. I'm using Dads crossbow and was ready. When he reached my deke I had him in my scope...or so I thought. I shot and ended up hitting my stuffer. The gobbler was never touched. He preceded to beat the crap out of my decoy. By the time I struggled to cock the crossbow he was walking away and out of range. I watched him for over an hour strutting around his hens. I made a big rookie mistake.... I set my decoys within 10 yards and I had a 3 power scope. Tomorrow I'll have him at 20 yards!

That sure was a lucky gobber. He popped out on me about 75 yards down the field. He strutted and gobbled his head off and moved a little my way. He was in behind a knoll and I could only see his head and fan. I knew he could see my decoys so I just waited for him. Pretty soon a hen pitched out of the same tree line that I was in. She glided down to the field and started picking. About 90 yards down a hen walked out in the field towards the gobbler and started cutting. I thouht maybe I should cutt back at her, but decided against it. To make a long story short I lost sight of him and thought he had went back in the woods with a hen. In the meantime a couple hens came up by my decoys, picked around a left.. Where I screwed up - When I set the blind I stood where the blind was going to be and could see the grassy area where turleys had been picking. The problem was when I got there this morning I hunt sitting down. I could only see the heads and a couple inches of the backs of the decoys. The little knoll in front of me blocked any futher vision. Unknown to me that gobbler and 5 hens was on the other side of the knoll. he was within killing distance, but I could not even see him. He had to see my jake decoy, but ignored it. Dumb move on my part on the set up. I moved the bliind after the hunt this morning.I got to watch Woodmaster arrow his decoy. I'll say one thing that gobbler ignored my store bought decoy, btu when he saw Woodmaster's stuffer he hot foooted it from about 80 yards out right to it. I've got few pictures that I'll post later. Lucky's days are numbered. Another bummer was when I got to my blind it was uprooted in the front and laying on it's back. That broke a couple of the fiberglass poles. I thought ," Man they must have had a big wind down here." Only after the hunt did I find out that Woodmaster's blind was in the same shape. Both were pushed over in oppoiste directions so that rules out wind and says a human did it. This is 1/2 mile back in and behind a locked gate. Fortunately nothing was stolen.

My blind is about 300 yards across the field from Woodmaster. I snapped these shots.. The hens and the gobbler are approaching Woodmaster’s set up. Notice the jake stuffer decoy by the big tree. The gobbler has spotted Woodmaster’s stuffer jake and he is hot footing it towards him. Notice the jake stuffer decoy by the big tree. After the miss.. notice the jake stuffer is no longer visible. He had been shot and flogged and lying on his side. Woodmaster’s shoulder surgery kept him form re-cocking the crossbow fast enough to get a second shot

I followed him in my scope and I THINK he stopped but I kept following. I thought I was still on him because I still seeing black . Thats my story and I'm stickin to it. BUT HE IS DEAD NOW.....I'll let Woody tell that story.

I didn't have a "Good First Day" also here in Ky. Heard lots of gobbles though on the first day but didn't get to hunt the area I wanted to. My heart just wasn't into hunting anyway; as on Friday my "Hillbilly" neighbor living below me set a trash fire which spread and burned around ten acres of my woods, an area I was planning to hunt on Saturday. I was hoping to bag my FIRST Turkey this season but rather I quit hunting, as now I haven't heard much gobbling since Saturday or seen any Turkeys except one hen. So I hung-up Turkey Hunting, for this year.

I made a quick check to see how many Turkeys were harvested so far in Taylor County, Ky. According to the Telecheck so far 154 birds have been harvested.
