My buddy asked me to take his 12 year old boy hunting. I told him I would after shane got his hunter ed. Well they called to inform me he passed the course. I want to take him but I am stressed about the whole deal. I guess I want to make a good Impression on him and get him hooked on hunting but I have never hunted with a kid.
Any tips would be helpful.

hey semisneak, i would glad to help you get started in the right direction with some tips that helped me,first i need to know what type of game you guys will be after? this is a slow process, so be real patienced, the rewards will come later! i like to rcommend just getting in the wooooods first, just to look around (no weapons) to see what both of you can see and show each other. kept these visits short, no cold weather or hard rain, good boots are a must and might bring some snacks. give him some old magazines to look at home---- you sorta just want to see if he"s interest will grow and that will be just slooooowly - no burn outs or bad experiences. his dad might want to tag along also, might get both of them hooked. turkey scout

hey semisneak, you need to get a wrap around blind, to help with the movement of you and shane, mine is a 12 ft. x27 inch high, these turkeys in clay county have very sharp eyes and kids like to move around alot.sometime when it get warmer you guys will have to have a sight-in those shotguns, shane will need a shotgun that fits, like the one i got my grandson, a remington 870 youth model, 20 gauge full choke ,3 inch mag, 6 shot with fiber-opic sights(adjustable) tru glo sites , we shoot off a bench rest, might start at 20 yards first, also buy some turkey targets , i use hunter specialties, we use a big card board box and white paper(20 x 20 inch square) staple the turkey target to paper and to the card board box,the goal is to get your shot patern so most of your shot is in the neck and head(some shotguns shoot high or low or right or left)and your aiming place is middle of neck, adjustable sites will help center your patern. and its also possible to just let shane just tag along they can learn alot that way too! turkey scout

I have been taking kids for a long time. I started them with out a weapon. The first thing I do is find a tree that is large enough to hold both of us. I may find two trees side by side. I make sure they understand that they should always sit against a tree that is as wide as their shoulders. We don't have eyes in the back of our head and this protects us from someone shooting from behind us. Next thing I make sure if they see another hunter to speak up. Do not move just say STOP in a clear and loud voice. I let them know if it spooks the turkeys, big deal. I make sure they have no red white or blue on. I explain why. I use a blind. I feed them oatmeal before heading out. They usually go to sleep after sitting about an hour or so in the sun. When they are bored I get up and move. When they are ready to go we leave. This can be a great time just remember if they scare the turkey Its OK as they are learning. Be ready to lose the tom of a lifetime so if it happens you won't take it out on your little hunting partner. The story about the one that got away will keep them coming back to the woods.
