okay gang.............
im fairly new to hunting turkey (last 4 years)
to date i have taken 0 with a bow.
last year was rather special................for the first time i had toms respond to my calls................and had 1 come in on me (where i proceeded to blow my chance royally).
i vividly remember one morning when i heard them moving away from me. i ran around a large hill to the other side (didn't take bow or calls)....................and they even responded to my natural voice yelp calling !
to the point (or the real question)
I AM VERY TEMPTED HUNT WITH SHOTGUN THIS YEAR.
(just so i can get one turkey under my belt).
so.....................should i stick with my convictions and hunt with bow only.........................or mix it up ?

If your a die hard bowhunter stick with the bow. If not use the scattergun to get one under your belt.

Take the pressure off, load-up your shotgun, and enjoy the hunt.

hey camoham, if i was going to set up for turkeys with a bow i would consider using a pop up blind, they don"t seem to shy away from a pop -up blind, i also would have some decoys out about 20 yards. what makes it really tough to get a boss gobbler with a bow is that you have to move move move to get your shot off, this is where the blind helps and the decoys will help kept there eyes on the decoy set-up which should give that extra time to draw and shoot. good luck turkey scout

There is no shame in taking a big gobbler with a gun. More times than not, the birds still win whether your carrying a bow or a gun. If you're a diehard and the thought of killing your first with a gun doesn't get you fired up, then take the bow. On the other hand, now that we have a fall season that lasts 3 weeks for archery equipment, that gives you another opportunity to take one with your bow if you do get one with a gun in spring.

thanx all................. i have a Portable wall blind ("hideout" made by Hunter spec).................... last year they were at least working with me......................... i do use a pack in "inflatable" decoy. that is what the tom came into last year. i was set up along a brushy fencerow. there is a an old gate opening to the adjacent property (i had previously witnessed from a distance turkey, deer, and coyote using this as an exit/entrance to crop field) the gate opening is cool in that it has some type of "vining" plant on each post that curves up above almost touching each other. a natural "arch" if you will. anyway, last year i had mistakenly left about 10 inches open on my left side (blind shaped in a U against the fence).....................i left my eyes off that opening for what seemed not long i heard a distinctive chirp.................looking left there he was within 5 yards of my decoy................... when i moved to clamp onto my loop...........he saw that and took off away. honestly, i was rattled and watched in disbelief as he walked away at brisk pace. bottom line...........should have had that hole sealed up...........and should have been moving only when he COULDNT see me ! i blew a 20 yard shot. i still considered that a success for a couple of reasons................. (1) the previous years ive never even heard a turkey shock gobble or anything for that matter. ( i now know how to talk to turkeys and get them fired up) (2) did i mention last season was the first time i heard the thundering gobble ? (that will make you blood boil for sure..........if not something has to be wrong !) (3) even though i didnt land that bird on that day.....................to me...............it doesnt get any closer than that. ive almost got it down now.....................just a work in progress. thanx all and sorry for the ramble. camoham
