Can you guys that turkey hunt on public land and the HNF in Southern Indiana tell me how crowded it is? How crowded is it thru the weekday?
Id like to do a camping/hunting trip this spring down south and wondered what time of the season would be the least crowded? I dont mind bumping into another hunter once in a while but im trying to avoid the hunter over every ridge type ground.
What time of the season would you guys plan on? h.h.

I hunt it some, but mostly hunt a private piece of ground surrounded by the HNF. It is hammered REALLY hard the first 5 days then it really lightens up and the bird hunting gets better anyway since the hens are nested up more and more and the gobblers are looking around more for the lone hens. I wouldn't go until the 2nd week. I am off of work for a full 2 weeks and guide people down there and after the first 3 days I usually tag out then call/guide. The hunting got better the the 2nd week and weekend. Good luck, what area of the HNF you thinking of hunting?

I hunt some good woods in the HNF close to Huron and the Bonds Chapel area.I gets hit really hard and a couple years ago some hunters got shot in the same area I like to hunt.I didn't go in there last year.Quite a few birds get taken out of there, but I just don't like fighting with everyone else.I think I will stick to private ground this year

It has been awhile but I have hunted Sugra Ridge area #5 and did not see a whole lot of turkey hunters.

Good luck, what area of the HNF you thinking of hunting? Not real sure yet. Most likely it will be somewhere around the Patoka area or south of there. Im more interested in what time to go to miss the big crowds. Thanks to all that post. h.h.

Woody where is area 5 ? Four years ago I checked the area around Spurgeon and found lots of birds. I then went to the property office to get a permit. Once there I got into a conversation with the manager. He told me the pressure was so bad there that even he didn't hunt it the first week.

It is about 6 miles east of Lynville right off of and North of Indiana 68. Here is a map. Not a very good one, but a map.. www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/publications/sugar.jpg

Thanks Woody, I haven't been in there in years. I would think the hunting pressure would be tough there too.

I hunt an area in the HNF a few miles west of Patoka and the hunting pressure really varies from year to year and from area to area especially on opening day. It is difficult to guess from year to year how many hunters will be in this area but generally the opening weekend is the most crowded. Weekdays are much less crowded and so are weekends later in the season. I also suspect that their may be some hidden areas around the Lake that receive less pressure than the rest.
Send me a PM if you have any specific places in mind in this area and I may be able to give you some suggestions.

I hunt HNF in Perry Co, and you get a decent amount of hunters, but there is so much land I don't think you would have a problem at all. Especially weekdays. Opening weekend is definitely the worst. I think the first 3 days are best, only the diehards are out during that time. Although they may be henned up, your still hunting unpressured birds. After opening weekend it can get tough (because of the amount of people that think they can walk around all day and kill one). If you hunt HNF, definitely stay in the woods. 75% of the other hunters are back home by 10am.

Hey Indyhunter, I am from Perry County and was wondering what part of the HNF you hunt. Mogan Ridge is right in my Backyard.

If you want to walk you can get away from hunters... get copies of the local horse trails and adventure trails then pack a lunch. Most turkey hunters will stay close to their truck or at leat the firelanes. A guy willing to pack in 2 miles can find himself a bird any day of the week.

Hey Indyhunter, I am from Perry County and was wondering what part of the HNF you hunt. Mogan Ridge is right in my Backyard. Hunt right there around Mogan. I don't know exactly where it starts and ends, but I see signs for it all the time so I know i'm either near it or on it. I stay at the campground there on the highway just north of Derby. Dennis's place (can't remember his last name at the moment). Hunt all through that area unless it gets too crowded then I hit the road and look for another place.

Try campin at delany park and hunt the near by jackson/ washington forest. VERY few hunters but you'll need to know what road to get on cause it looks like a private drive! My buddy has taken birds there the last 3 years.
