A Great Horned Owl floats noiselessly through the dusk toward a roosting turkey, talons spread wide. The Gobbler, like all the owl's victims, never hears the attack coming, but he sees it. The Tom begins to take flight just prior to impact and flails violently as the Owl's talons bite deep but far off the mark. The owl is hopelessly entangled with the larger bird as both plunge to the ground below.
That is one scenario that might explain the bizzare discovery made on the grounds of Clifty State Park recently. A co-worker of my wife was hiking a few weeks ago when she came upon a dead owl and a turkey locked in a bizzare embrace of death. The Owl still had hold of the turkey, and the turkey still had it's beak stuck in the owl. Why the two birds came together is a mystery to me. The gobbler is a least a two year old by the look of him, and would seem to be a rather ambitious prey for even a big owl. However, I cannot see how else the two birds would have came into a fatal conflict with one another.
I wish I had seen the crime scene myself, as the person who found the birds is not a woodsman by any stretch. Perhaps I could have told more from clues at the scene.
Has anyone heard of such a thing?

Wow!
I would have liked to seen that one myself.
Your scenario seems very plausible.
I wouldn't think a gobbler could peck an owl to death.
Maybe the fall killed them both??

Interesting to say the least.
A great horned owl is very formidable. I can’t imagine a turkey standing up to it.

My brother and I were talking, and he thought perhaps the owl went for the turkey's head, thinking it to be some smaller critter. He pointed out that owls have been know to sink their toes into more than one hunter's head by accident over the years as well.
If the attack went down while the turkey was roosted, and they did go down together, the owl's death could have easily came from the much heavier turkey landing on top.
Of course, they could have got together on the ground for all we know. An interesting puzzle, for sure. Can you imagine the noise??
I'll try and scan the pics and post them if I can.

I was bow hunting for deer once, and got in my tree before daylight. I was in full camo, and catching some Z's until it got light. An owl landed on my head! I don't know who was more surprised.

I had an owl come sailing through woods and landed on a limb about 10 yards from me at the same height I was..
I never moved my head. Just followed it with my eyes.
After it landed it was looking dead away from me. I turned my head to see it better and must have made a teensy tiny noise as it's head swiveled around and looked right at my face. After about a 2 minute stare down it flew to another limb but kept looking back at me.
I've had one fly at my face in the pre-dawn light before. not a good feeling..
