I am going to an auction tomorrow with a Herters 7mm with a scope , not sure what kind. Rifle looks to be in good shape, what should I bid, not sure about the brand or what it's worth....thanks.

I saw one on GunBroker with a current bid of $500. I personally am not familiar with Herters.

I'm pretty limited on them myself. Herters didn't make them, they were European imports from multiple places and based on the 98 action (good action). If there were any other action types I am unaware of them - which would hardly be surprising. If in good shape and it's 98 action and has a reasonable piece of glass $500 sounds OK to me; just depends on what you want for a bolt gun. there are multiple ways to look at it. For new lower end (think $$$) bolt guns the Marlins are solid and flying off the shelves, a used Savage w/ AccuTrigger would make another very nice modest bolt gun. Now if you really like the 98 action - then you may want to look at that opportunity. What little I've read on them they seem to be a decent rifle - good luck.

Thanks for the input guys. I am really not even in the market for a new rifle but I figure if I could pick it up for cheap, just didn't want to bid too much on a gun I knew nothing about.

I purchased the 7mm at the auction, it has a beautiful stock with elk and some other things engraved into the wood. Not sure if it's factory but I am pretty sure it is, it is labeled as the deluxe model. One problem though is that it has a rather high comb-monte carlo stock but I am left handed and it is quite uncomfortable on my cheek. I am pretty sure its a 98 but not positive, not sure about the scope, never heard of it -

Okay, I looked in a back issue of The Gun Digest 1969 and read that Herter's J9 & U9 rifles were made in Yugoslavia, using FN Mauser-type action with slide safety, hinged floorplate, and fully adjustable triggers. The U9 used a BSA-type action. Prices (back in 1969) ran from $79.50 (Without any open sights) up to around $100. Calibers were: .22-250, .243, 6 mm, .270, .308, .30-06, as well as .264, 7 mm Mag., and .300 Win. Mag. Hope this helps.

Yep, this one was made in Yugo- for Herters. I won't have the rifle until Monday, couldn't bring it home with me, pick it up at the dealer. I am very interested to find out if the stock is factory, it has some detailed elk engravings. I have read that they can be very good shooting rifles so I hope this one is as well. I didn't pay much attention to the scope but it didn't appear to be of great quality but had never heard of the brand and can't remember the name. I will post the pics as soon as I get the rifle, is there a place to get an aftermarket stock for this gun?

I doubt if the Elk engravings is a factory job. As for aftermarket stocks, I doubt if this would be an easy thing to find as this model hasn't ben produced for many years. If the existing stock is in good shape I suggest you keep it as is.

I shoot left handed and the way this stock is designed it is not real comfortable for a lefty.

I am not sure what your Herter's is worth, but if you're left handed you might consider a Ruger "Left Hand" M-77 Hawkeye.

I picked that 7mm up here it is, the ffl I picked it up from said the elk and designs could very well have come on this rifle. He said it didn't look after market to him but who knows. It is very unique looking, the scope is a Red Arrow? Will probably change that out.

The little bump/button inside the trigger guard actually opens the trap door for shells, I think it's very unique. I have never seen one placed there before.
