I was reading the other day where someone in another state was proposing that Mushroom hunters purchase a habitat stamp to hunt on state owned properties and that the hours be limited to the hours left over after the mid-day turkey hunts end. Something like noon-the rest of the day. I know that the week I was at Sugar Ridge last spring, I ran into several mushroom hunters (all of which were expert turkey hunters :  and several ran into me (one that was obviously deaf since he couldn't hear the bird gobbling that was coming down the spoil about 70 yards in front of me). They sited safety concerns and hunter orange requirements for mushroom hunters although I'm not sure that is their reasoning. What do you think? I hunt mushrooms and turkeys on some state ground, but still wouldn't mind getting a habitat stamp and only being able to mushroom hunt after 1:00 |

Would that mean that if you were turkey hunting and you found a patch of mushrooms, it would be illegal to pick them before noon? I don't know. I didn't read that far into the proposal. Just skimmed over the idea and thought it was a pretty good one. I do believe you would have to have a habitat stamp. Heck, if people wanted to mushroom hunt before noon I guess they could buy a turkey tag and carry a shotgun. More revenue for the state.  |

Where would that end? Should hikers be restricted during deer season? Bird hunters? Sounds like a slippery slope to me.

I think education of the public is a better answer to this problem. Signs on state properties and articles in newspapers and on TV news of any areas where turkey hunting is popular.

I'vw hunted turkeys for about ten years now and have never ran into a mushroom hunter I hunt all public ground. I used to hunt sugar ridge but the ticks got so bad I had to quit.

I think its a stupid idea!
Maybe if mushroom hunters unite they could get turkey hunters kicked out of the woods!
I bet there is more mushroom hunters than turkey hunters
However I do think that anyone who uses state properties should have some kind of a pass like a hunting license or user pass of some sort!

I think education would be better also. Mushroom poachers are it seems in every woods! Just last week while talking to both landowners on either side of me they BOTH admitted to hunting mushrooms on my land. But Both also in other arts of the conversation mention things about me being on their land. My East neighbor saw my sighting in target that is on the property line and she mentioned in passing it was alwful close to the prop line, then later in the conversation told me about getting too close to the West neighbors house while she was looking for mushrooms which means she had to cross my land to get there! The West neighbor told me to be sure to call him if a deer i shoot goes over on him before i go look for it but then when the conversation turned to mushroom hunting he laughed and said yeah my wife mushroom hunts the whole ridge along here. meaning she is on my land for at least part of that ridge!
As far as state land Ive had more issues with other turkey hunters than mushroom hunters. Although last year at Mississinewa I wish I had the video camera running when a mushroom hunter saw my decoy and decided he was going to sneak up on it. lol
for some reason tresspassing laws must not include mushroom hunters.

I think if you have to draw to hunt an area then everyone else should be kept out until the hunt is over. I agree with the need for at least some kind of license or habitat stamp for public grounds. A hunting or fishing license would cover it.
I think Pigeon River keeps the mushroom hunters out until after turkey hunting hours are over.

I don't have the numbers, but from what I see, there are more turkey hunters on state ground. Either way, only one group contribute to the DNR to fund the land. You may not have understood the proposal in the other state. It was to allow turkey hunting from daylight until 1:00 and then allow mushroom hunting from 1:00 through the rest of the day. I really don't see that as kicking anyone out of the woods. I think it is considered multi-use property management. The WMA I hunted in Florida had one entry gate, an office and an attendant. When you went through the gate they checked your drivers license and permit to make sure that you were drawn to turkey hunt that day. Nobody else was allowed in the management area during the hunt. It was something like Muskatatuck, except they enforced the policy. When you look at the F&WA's in Indiana compared to some other states, you really see that they are not "managed" much at all. Limited area with a come one come all system. We hunted 20,000 acres and were three of 15 guys drawn for the four day hunt. Although I do not think limiting access in that manner is the way to go, the quality of hunting was somewhat better than the state managed grounds I have hunted in some other states. |

I have more trespass encounters/arrests with mushroom hunters and ginseng diggers than any other group out there. They seem to never respect prop. lines. PATHETIC!

I had a hunt ruined by mushroom hunters one morning on Hillenbrand FWA last year and signs were posted every where that mushroom hunting wasn't allowed until after 12:00. I guess rules are made to be broken.   |

first everybody is getting off the original post we are talking public hunting areas not private . i have to agree with cambrygsp gooblerstopper what would you think of alternating days turkey hunters get the morning one day mushroomhunters get the morning the next. don,t sound as good now does it. i love doing both but i don,t like waiting till noon to hunt either 1 when it hot mix that in with the ticks. far as a permit goes you are supose to check in on fwa aint that the same

I mushroom hunt my own land and I wear an orange hat and vest to do it during turkey season. I just dont trust people even though it is posted.
Buster I agree with you on that one. I had 8 people arrest one spring hunting mushrooms. Not at the same time. Amazing how that takes care of things.

Glendale FWA is well posted that the mushroom hunters are not allowed to hunt the property until the morning turkey hunting has ended.

A mushroom hunter can go whenever he feels like it. If you turkey hunt public ground in N.E. Indiana with a few exceptions you must draw for the hunt. This gives you a 2 or 3 day hunt period. Add weather in and you get washed out every couple of years. It would not hurt the mushroom hunters to wait until the hunts are over and pay a small fee to use the area. What if the mushroom hunters had to draw how would they like that?

I'm assuming that the turkey hunts now end at mid-day on public property to relieve some of the pressure on the birds. I'm all for alternating days if you can prove that: 1. The turkey population needs the additional pressure removed that alternating days would provide to them or.... 2. The mushroom population needs the additional pressure removed that alternating days would provide to them. I've mushroom hunted my whole life and have not noticed any difference in the taste of a mushroom that is picked in the morning or after 1:00. I also wasn't aware that the ticks do not come out until after 1:00 No. I'm glad to see that some F&WA's do have guidelines in place to help people from ruining each others hobbies. Maybe Nate will read this and put up some signs at Sugar Ridge this year.  |

I would agree that areas that have a draw hunt should limit mushroom hunters. If you're talking about limiting ALL public land, I would disagree. That would include 186,000 acres of HNF. I'm thinking the local folks who live there wouldn't take too kindly to being restricted from their mushroom woods.
