A friend of mine bought two guns off of a guy for $200. One was a 10-22 and the other was this gun, a Hi-Point model 995 in 9mm. I had never seen one, much less shot one. The gun was very compact and sturdy in appearance. I loved the sights, very durable. My pal said he hadn't touched them, and they were dead on. We sat out an old flower pot and I hit it every time. The gun was a blast to shoot. Anybody out there have one of these?

A brother of a friend had one and it jams constantly. Even after a very good cleaning, which it didn't need, it still wouldn't cycle a full magazine.

I wonder if they are prone to jam, or was it that gun? I looked it up and it retails for $200. A lot of shooters wouldn't touch it for that reason alone, I suppose. If it fuctioned well, it would be nice to have around for defense, as it obviously isn't meant to be a target rifle.

Hi- Point is not known for quality. It would be the very last firearm i would trust with my life, but it looks like it might make a handy club in a pinch. JMHO.

I've heard their customer service puts other manufacturers to shame. Most of the negative comments I've heard about Hi Point come from guys at the gunshop with more expensive tastes who have never shot them. I personally don't own any, have never shot one but have seriously considered the low low price point for a torture test to satisfy my curiosity.
D, I bet if your buddy contacted the company they would make it right. They are in Ohio IIRC.

Good to know Chico, but my buddy's brother ditched his POS.

I doubt very seriously that any Hi-Point can ever be "made right"

I know two friends who picked up barely used Hi-point 9mm pistols for a song. Neither would cycle hollow point bullets. Neither would cycle an entire magazine of quality ball ammo. Both were ergonomically a nightmare, pointed as naturally as a thumb, were essentially uncontrollable in rapid fire drills, and to top it all off, were quite ugly to boot. Heck, they weren't even aerodynamically sound enough to throw with sufficient accuracy at an attacker after they would inevitably jam up. The only way to make either of these pistols right would be to completely redesign them. I'd feel more well armed sporting a black powder revolver while sitting in a dunk tank.

I have two of the pistols, one the polymer C9 (9mm), and the other, and older JH (metal frame .45). I don't own the carbines but know others who do and have shot the 4095 (40 S&W).
I actually run a site for folks that have them, and the warranty is true. The .45 when I got it would light strike, jam, you name it. I sent it back and it was returned with a new barrel, slide, springs........everything but the frame and grip panels, and it runs without fail now. The C9 I bought new and it took 2-300 rounds to break in, but it now runs well enough that I carry it as much as I do my GP100 or G22.
Most feeding issues on the guns are either the width of the mag lips needing tweaked, or ammo OAL.
Sasquatch, that's an older model with the chrome cover. They switched to a black cover a few ago, and now have another version called the TS (Tactical Stock). Same action and all just a different stock design. Rumors have also been flying for a few years that they are going to make a model in .45ACP to go with 9mm and 40, but it's still "in progress" I guess you'd say.

I would like to try out the .40 carbine when it comes out. The Hi Point site says that it is not available right now and that they are working on the .45 carbine.

I was impressed with it for what it is... not a target rifle but a very affordable gun that goes bang reliably. Guntests thought it was a pretty good buy. That warrenty is impressive. Out of curiosity I looked the gun up on youtube. I put in the search terms "Hi-Point Carbine Jamming" and came up with two videos, one of which involved an aftermarket mag. I found a lot more videos of it working quite well. I guess I'll have to shoot My pal's and make up my own mind.

My dad (an FFL) placed a decent sized order at one point (several guys wanted to buy stuff at once), and they sent him a free Hi-Point 9mm pistol (I guess every order over $x that day, from that distributor, got one)... He shot it some, and it seems to cycle, feed, and go bang every time... Being blow-back actuated, the slide (and the whole weapon, as a result) is pretty heavy, and I don't know that I would carry it, but it seems fine enough...
