My 7 year old yellow lab has a combination of premature hip problems and Lyme's disease so I talked to a friend of mine who breeds labs for duck hunting friends not for a living and is the same person that I have purchased my last 2 dogs from and found out he wants to hold off till next fall because he wants to run some trials this summer with his latest female.
So last week I am looking through our small local newspaper which posts pictures of animals for adoption at the county animal shelter and I spot a picture of what is described as a young female yellow lab.
With nothing to loose I stopped in and here is what I found.
They had a young (maybe 1 year old or less ) 55 lb. female yellow that was brought in by a police officer from another jurisdiction two weeks ago and that's all they know about her. The dog had had its dew claws removed, she was spayed, her nails are trimmed and she is house broken that's the way she came in.
When I took her into a quite room to examine her I found out to my surprise as well as the shelter employees that this dog also understood silent hand signals( SIT-DOWN- BACK).
Well it has been 72 hours since I brought her home and she just fits perfectly into our household.
OH and she knows how to fetch and swim. The only problem we have is we have been running all sorts of names by her to see if she will respond and so far it appears that ROSIE will be her new name.
Now some might say I am taking a chance on a unknown dog in hopes of having a good hunting dog. Well the first lab I ever owned belonged to a family that paid big $ for this dog but could not keep her because they could never control her, she was never hunted she was purchased to be a house dog. That dog (with a little training) not only turned out to be a hunting machine she was also the most loving well behaved house dog anyone could ever own.People till this day still talk about that dog and say that the GOOD LORD intended on me having that dog. I hope it holds true again.
