What happened to this little guy? This little fawn has been traveling with his mom and sibling, something happened to tear this flap of skin from his hind quarter. I'm wondering if a coyote got a good hold on him but couldn't finish him off. If he was hit by a vehicle his legs should have been broken. What do you think? Deer are amazingly resilient, in the second photo you can see his mom cleaning the wound.

Could have been either. A few years ago I put down a small button buck that had been hit by a car. He had severe road rash, hide and muscle gone to the point that the top of 6 vertebra were visable, that was all the damage there was no broken legs.

Update! This little guy is still doing all right. No signs of infection or suffering yet.
