I thought the 1895 only came in 45-70?
As far as the rifles you mentioned, I'd go with the Ruger. Better inherent accuracy, better trigger, better scope mounting and about a half a pound lighter. $.02

Ask dbd870 about the Marlin's in .44 mag. From everything I've seen, the Marlin's in that caliber are hit and miss as far as accuracy. Roll the dice and you might end up with a bad one.

Yep it's an 1894 not an 1895 - anyway........until Marlin puts a reasonable twist and bore diameter in their 44 mags there is no way I'd consider one. Oh; and if you think sending a lemon back to the factory is going to make it all better - HAH! Everyone that has one of the new 77/44 & has posted about them has been positive. Easy choice to me.
OTOH Their big bores are good to go.

Or a Ruger 99/44 or 96/44 or their old 44 carbine would also be good choices.

I lucked into one of the tack driving 1894's and I just love the feel / heft of that levergun, hard to explain but just feels good which I think is the key for choosing...both are fine firearms so get what feels best to you.

IMHO I don't think you can go wrong with either gun. If I didn't already have the 1894, I'd seriously look at the Ruger 77. The Ruger seems to be getting great reviews. However, I'm with whitetailhunter though, in that I love the traditional look of the 1894. The first year I hunted with it, I seemed to have issues with the scope mount, eye relief, and transitioning to progressive lense on my glasses. The second year, 2008, I pulled the scope and practiced with open sights. Since I was consistently under 2" groups out to 100 yards, I left it that way. I took my largest doe to date (dressed to 154 lbs and DNR checked at 5-1/2 years old)with the lever gun in 2008 as shown here. I just love the classic look.

Either one would be okay. I have a Ruger M-77/44 and like it because it's light in weight, has a removable 4-shot magazine, you can easily mount a scope or peep sight on it. Also the accuracy of the Ruger is outstanding!!

I have the Marlin 1894 and love it. Mine is scoped and shoots great. I have heard some horror stories from others with their 1894's, but I have to say mine has been solid.
That being said, the Ruger 77/44 is on my "Top 3 wish list"! The only gun I currently want more than the 77/44 is a new Savage smokeless muzzy and am seriously considering selling the 1894 to help fund the Savage purchase!

I had a Marlin 1894. Mine had an oversized bore that measured .432. Marlin replaced the barrel with one that was the same size. They told me that it was within their specs. I could only get decent accuracy with oversized cast bullets. I sold it and bought a Handi rifle.
Most of the reports that I have heard about Rugers have been positive.

A wise choice. Mount a 2-7x Leupold on it and you'll have a deadly deer rifle.

The older ones are hard to find. What you need to do is buy a Leupold VX-1 2 to 7 power (Shotgun/Muzzle Loader) scope with HEAVY Duplex. If you plan to reload your accuracy will be better. I use 23.5 grs/ H-110/240 gr. Hornady XTP bullet in PMC or Remington cases, and receive excellent accuracy.
