Since I don't have 40 acres to play around in and the shooting that I get to do that is close to my house is the IGC, I'm not sure where I can 'visually see' what the shot patterns look like a different distances.
I want to pattern loads and see just how tight or spread out at certain distances the different chokes (modified is what came with the gun). It'll help me know how far is too far and to make sure that I'm not over extending the reach of the gun/load.

OK bit confused as to what is being asked? Are you looking for a place to pattern your gun? IGC has a pattern board.

I think he didn't realize you use paper on the patterning board that you take down to look at your pattern up close? Correct?

I didn't realize that IGC had a place where I could place a target on a board and pattern a load. I have shot the clays there (right out in front of the 'store', but haven't toured the whole facility yet to know they could do that. My son and I found the clays at the end (sporting clays I think?) and the area around the corner that has a 'bird' and a 'rabbit' to shoot at. We didn't make it any further around than that.
I figured that walking out onto a range wouldn't be in my best interest...LOL I just assumed something like that would have to be done on private property away from city limits. I'll have to ask them at the IGC where I can 'see' what my shells are actually doing when they leave the barrel. And, how effective the shot would be at different distances.
Like I've mentioned in a couple of other posts, I'm new to all of this and just want to make sure I'm knowledgable before I take my kids out in the woods. Right now I don't know what I don't know to know what to ask...If that makes any sense at all.......LOL.....
So, TTH, "Yes" I'm looking for a place to get a visual on how broad a pattern different shot loads spread out at different distances with different chokes. Currently, the only choke I have is the modified choke that came with the gun when I purchased it.
I'll check out the IGC the next time I make it out there and ask about where to go to pattern my loads. I'm going to get some 2 3/4" #6 shells and take them out there to see what I can find out.
By the way, what is the best way to purchase shells??? Online or at a store? Value is most important at this time. My philosophy on this is sort of like my golf game. Expensive equipment would be great for the guy that is really close to being a pro, but in my case, I'm so far from that end of the spectrum that it couldn't possibly help! LOL... I can lose cheap golf balls just as easily as expensive ones, they all the same in the bottom of the pond!!!!!
Thanks again for all the help...

Probably WalMart. I would think the shipping would kill you on online purchased shells.

Don't forget the Hazmat fee - what is it now $23.00 per shipment?

HazMat for primers and powder as components, but not as loaded ammo.

Bushhog: IGC does have a patterning board. Some clubs use sheets of paper, others will have a pattern board on which white paint (usually a can of pain and a roller is there) is spread between shots. The site below is one which has some decent charts on chokes/distances. Depending on whether you are hunting or shooting clays, your gun and chokes may shoot/pattern some brands/loads better than others. Not a big deal when hunting with shot sizes in the 7 - 8 1/2 size, but in general the holes in pattern become more noticeable the larger the shot. If shooting clays on a more serious basis, then finding the brand load which your gun patterns best becomes more important. www.briley.com/briley-shotguns.aspxAs far as affordable shells. Walmart is tough to beat but much as I hate to say it, keep an eye on Dick's sales flyer too. Now and then they run specials on Remington Gun Clubs, AA, etc. and the price per box is tough to beat. Unless you are set on a 7/8 load in 12 ga, I would stick with 1 oz loads intitially. While the extra 1/2 ounce of lead won't really be noticeable on the pattern board, many of the 7/8 loads push around 1390 feet per second while the 1 oz drop down to about 1155-1255. I'm not recoil sensitive, but that extra punch will take a toll after a day or two of 200-400 rounds fired. I would not worry about ordering online unless you are pruchasing a shell you are having trouble finding on the shelf or are purchases a minimum of 10 flats. Here again, if you have a gun club near you that has a store or sells shells, some will allow you to place your order through them which will save you on shipping/hazmat fees. Good luck and have fun!
