Now its back to hunting, not waiting for a doe to run a buck by me. Back to hunting a certain buck, hunting feeding habits and bedding areas. To me, now it takes more hunting skill than when the orange army is out and about. Granted muzzy season is still easier than bow, but still takes alot more skill, than modern firearm season during the month of Nov.
I'm fired up!

There will be a late rut with the does that did not get bred during the November rut. Those bucks are still going to be pushing does if they are available. Cold weather makes the corn field a deer magnet, hunt food sources.....

And I am guessing all those people who wish Indiana would move their modern gun season out of the "prime rut" will not shoot any of those bucks? A buck chasing a doe is too easy. If I disagree with something, I do not participate (example: all day turkey hunting). I wonder how many people who disagree with Indiana's 32 days of gun season and modern gun during the "prime rut" set out 20 or so of those days or only carry a bow?

I've asked that question many times myself. Now a few will hunt bow only as they are bowhunters only. But that is a teensy, tiny , miniscule number of hunters. It sure gets oid with a certain segment of hunters trying to limit opportunity by restricting others and they could voluntarily do it themselves, but wont..

That's because most of us aren't disciplined enough to restrict ourselves, we need someone to do it for us.

Funny how many of us use the slur orange army to refer to hunters that are not archery hunters. Lets take the slur Orange Army and place it where it belongs in the trash can. They may be firearms only hunters but they are hunters.
Firearms isn't broken, this isn't an anti firearms state such as Ill and Ohio. Leave it alone.

ROFL, call me orange army all you want, whatever it takes for me to find a deer for the freezer.
I've had no luck in archery or shotgun, now I move to phase III.
Someday I hope to have some private land of my own, until then I will keep trying to get some meat that hard way.

Woody, I had this discussion at work the other night. We get the first 6 days off and Friday morning of season each year. Yet the same guy that says our season should be shorter takes off the second weekend? Giving him 13 out of 16 days to hunt? Makes no sense to me.

In my head, the term "Orange Army" refers to the the "hunters" that buy a gun and/or ammo the night before season, never sight it in, tresspass, have no idea what safety or sportsmanship are, hunt out of other people's stands, hang a stand or worse yet, sit down 15 yards from your stand that you've had up for a month, etc, etc, etc! To me, THAT'S what I consider the "Orange Army"! I also call it the "Orange Army" in a less derogetory way, simply referring to the sheer numbers of hunters firearms season brings out.

I agree Decatur, thats what pops in my head also. I see what point lugnutz is trying to make because at times I feel the same way. Early archery can spoil a guy, so peaceful, deer everywhere and then wham heres comes shock and awe here in your area. I think its hard to express exactly what you mean on a computer so lets not bash ole lugnutz for his post. I gun hunt also and do support moving firearms back but not out of greed, just another way to increase the buck herd. I'm do know rule breakers come in every form, but can honestly say I have never seen anyone hunting out the truck window in archery season. I think both gun and bow hunters have their place in the woods and I do enjoy carrying the old 870 but I am also glad when its over.

I know one thing the DNR is letting hunters harvest too many doe in my area of the State..I hardly seen any doe in the past two year...I see five bucks for every doe on my property I hunt....I think the doe numbers are way down.

I've been seeing the same thing except when I was hunting Newport (06-08 seasons). I lived and hunted Madison Co for most of mylife and they are 8 bonus. I was lucky to see 4 does a year, but I sure did see the bitty bucks. This was in early archery through shotgun season. Just moved to Lawrence Co and had the same thing this year just more numbers.

According to a few around here you want to kill all the does, that's what makes the bucks grow big antlers... ha ha !! Sounds like the lack of does in your area means the deer herd in your area is healthy ;D

That's because most of us aren't disciplined enough to restrict ourselves, we need someone to do it for us. BINGO...DING DING DING...Give that man a cigar! A lot of the bowhunting "experts" who scream about the "orange army slobs" come off as basically saying, "hey look, if you aren't as skilled a hunter as I am, and you don't hunt in as challenging a fashion as I do, then your limited hunting time should be limited even further so that you don't have as many opportunities to kill the bucks I want to kill in the manner I want to kill them." We as bowhunters get 6 weeks to hunt before the "orange army slobs" even get to go out. We as bowhunters get to hunt, hands down THE BEST weeks to hunt of the whole season...the first two weeks of November, all by ourselves. And people want to take time away from hunters who are gun hunters. Stop and think about what you are actually saying. It really gets tiresome...and I LOVE bowhunting...but I also LOVE shotgun hunting.
