Went out with an old friend on Thursday. He had a field with geese in the area and just a few ducks by his scouting. Ended up with one mallard in the bag and no geese even seen until driving home when we saw about 30 in the pond not even a half mile away. We could have had a full limit of mallards but you know it's hunting! We had a good time before eating turkey and a good way to get back out after the birds!
Saturday I hunted with a few guys I hooked up with earlier around home. We had 2 great hunts but still no geese. We shot several drake green wings that were fully plumed out. I have never seen them so colorfull. We only shot a few mallards, no woodies but we did shoot wigeon, black duck, ring neck, and the greenwingers. Only one hen teal and one hen mallard. The drake mallards were not fully plumed but all the rest were wall worthy. Made for a fun weekend.
I have had my heart set on a widgeon and we had a group Saturday that circled several times. A lone bird split off and came in. I shot it and landed it in the brush. My dog made a good retrieve but only to bring in a hen mallard . Sunday we had another group work like every bird should I was working a jerk cord and when I pulled up I felt resistance on my gun barrel. I was in the bushes and thought it was just a vine. Well it was my jerk cord and kept me from shooting at these birds that were cupped in the decoys The only saving grace was my dog made some great retrieves on the 2 my buddies dropped.
Anyways, it's been a long 3 years for me with hit and miss hunting opportunities due to work and moving. This was a great weekend to get out after some ducks. I'm ready for the geese now.
I didn't think you could kill so many birds on Geist. ;D
