Fairbanks Landing deer hunting news
---------------------------------
Plenty of openings remain for reserved deer hunts at new Fairbanks Landing
FWA
About 200 hunting opportunities remain unfilled for reserved deer hunts at
the new Fairbanks Landing Fish and Wildlife Area in Vigo and Sullivan
counties.
Deer hunters will be randomly drawn for hunts held on the weekends of Nov.
12-13 and Nov. 19-20 -- the first two weekends of deer firearms season.
"We currently have signed up 154 hunters for the first weekend hunt and 29
for the second weekend hunt," said Fairbanks/Minnehaha property manager Ron
Ronk. "Our quota is 200 hunters for each weekend."
Ronk says the tremendous amount of interest in last year's hunt during the
first weekends of firearms season, long lines of hunters at check-in
stations, and the numbers of hunters turned away during these weekends led
the DNR to decide to pre-register Fairbanks FWA deer hunters during the
first two weekends of this year's firearms season.
Hunters have until the end of October to sign up for a chance at one weekend
hunt per person. Hunters can register for a reserved Fairbanks FWA hunt at
the Minnehaha FWA office.
The Minnehaha FWA office, open 5 a.m. - 3 p.m. weekdays and 5 a.m. - 6 p.m.
weekends during the sign-up period, is about 2.5 miles east of Sullivan on
state Route 54.
Applicants drawn for hunts, as well as those not drawn, will be notified by
mail.
The 8,000-acre Fairbanks Fish and Wildlife Area opened last November. The
property is northwest of Fairbanks, Ind. in Vigo and Sullivan counties.
Bonus anterless deer licenses cannot be used at Fairbanks FWA.
