Well, we are over halfway through the 2009 gun season. The farm I hunt still hasn't had 1 stalk of corn cut[650-700 acres]. Last year, my son and I had 2 bucks and 4 does on the ground in 3 days. This year, I took 1 good doe on the 2nd day, and my son has taken zip. Talked to a lot of guys over this last weekend. Seems like everybody is down on sightings/kills this year. I know the numbers of deer aren't down, so they must be hangin in the standing corn, and going nocturnal. We probably have 35%+ of the corn still standing, in the county. Gonna give it the ole college try between now and next Sun. nite. I'm thinkin the ML season is going to be the hot ticket, when the secondary rut kicks in, and the corn is cut[hopefully] maddog

i agree with you ML season is going to the the hot ticket hunting this year. I know where I hunt they didn't even start cuting the corn untill last sunday. Am hoping its out by this weekend. and not only that but has been warmer this year than normal. And after talking to my dad and granddad they both seem to think that the warm weather has stalled the rut. is suposed to be colder this week so hopefully we see some action. good luck to you and your son maddog. stay safe and if ya see anything good let us know.

well, having deer hunted for about 3 decades, I think the initial rut is pretty much over, irregardless of the weather. Normally it is peeking/subsiding by the first 2-3 days of the gun season. Might be a few straggler does out there, but by Dec. 5, hopefully things will pick back up.

I'm right there with ya. The place i hunt is surrounded in corn to the south, southwest, southeast and northwest. The frustrating thing is the fact that most of the corn went down this weekend and the only ones still standing are right around the property i hunt. That being said, the landowner did at least start on cutting his last evening, but he only got a few rows done. I seen some deer opening weekend, and a few does over the past week. Have not see a buck since Sunday night. Did not see a deer at all yesterday. I think you are right, i think the muzzy season this year will be incredible for all the guys still dealing with the corn issue. There is going to be a lot of bucks who are going to make it and if and when that corn comes down they have to go somewhere else to hide. It's been a very tough and very frustrating season so far, i just keep telling myself to be patient though because i really think Muzzy season this year will be my "real" deer season, if the crops come down that is.

despite the standing corn, I've seen several bucks. Most have been dinks, except one[long story on why I didn't get him]. What has really surprised me, is I've seen only 2 does, since opening day, and harvested one[120 lb. field dressed].

Same for me. I've seen some deer, a little less than average, corn is still up. ML season will be great.
The weather does not stall the rut. It does affect rutting activity during daylight hours, but the breeding gets done.

it will be interesting to see the DNR data on total kill, for this year. Something tells me, that in my area, we are gonna have deer crawling out of the woodwork, next year. Normally, there are 12-15 deer taken off the property I hunt, every year, for a number of yrs. This yr. to the best of my knowledge, there have been 4 taken.

I am having a pretty dismal season so far too but I cannot really blame it on the corn still being in. Within a 1 mile radius of where I am hunting there is only 1 small patch of corn still standing. In the past it seems that I have always had some winter wheat growing somewhere on the property I hunt but none this year. Praying for cold weather soon and a active secondary rut!!

I will be honest with ya......I have seen 3 deer while on stand this entire deer season. I have hunted all but one weekend and many afternoon and evenings this season.
I have bumped a few deer on my way in or out, but as far as being in a deer stand....I have seen 3 since October 01
This has been my worst year since the first year I hunted OVER 20 years ago!

I am part of the bowhunters survey in Indiana and I saw less than half the deer I usually see and spent the same amount of time on stand. I hope late season is different from all other years and at least get my second for the year. I got bit by a mosquiito of all things this morning while on stand, way too late for that stuff.

Well, after all that complaining earlier, let me tell ya a story. The only shooter buck i have seen all year was on the 11th while bowhunting. He was at 30 yards but on the one trail where i have very limited shot opportunities, so i let him pass. Tonight, i wanted to go hunting, but my wife works till 6 at the hospital. I have a 4 year old and 2 year old boy. I called up my folks to see if they could take babysitting duties for a few hours. Well, there stove had went out and they were on there way to get a new one so they had to pass tonight. My brother hunted, and wouldn't you know it, that big buck from the 11th was in there 20 yards from my stand. My brother could see him from his stand as he sits just on the opposite corner from me. He was chasing after does which is a great sign. So i guess it just goes to show ya, keep after it, it can change in a heartbeat. Yeah i'm a little dissapointed i was not there, but wont have a problem rolling out of bed tomorrow.
