Last year I tried to do a Euro mount for the first time. It turned out really good, except that some of the peroxide got on the back of the bases and turned them white. I had the peroxide level below the base of the antler. I mixed baby powder with some peroxide to make a jelly that I painted on the top of the skull that wasn't submerged and around the bases. Am I doing something wrong, or did the antler soak up some of the liquid? I have my rack and my brother-in-law's to do this week. Thanks for any advice.

I've never had any issues with antlers "soaking" or any of the peroxide leaching into the antler bases at all. My guess is somehow the bases came in contact with the product and it bleached them.
I use Salon Care 40 Volume Clear that I get from the beauty supply place and have never had an issue with it harming the antlers.

I was using 50% strength. I watered it down a little, but the jelly I brushed around the bases was full strength. I might have time to put one rack in to soak today.
Thanks for replying, you helped me out a lot with the one I did last year.

I had time to put my rack in to soak today. I was real carefull to not let the back of the bases touch any of the peroxide. Here is a couple of pictures of how I am doing it. The jelly has already started to run off a little.

I like to learn to do things myself. I wanted a longbow this year. After looking at prices, I decided to learn how to make them. Since March, I have made 3 of them. That's just how I am, I would rather do something myself than pay someone else to do it.

Looks good. When I do mine I don't even fool with the paste around the bases. I take a turkey basting syringe and just gently squirt peroxide up to the antler bases every so often just to get them wet now and then. That set of antlers is looking good!
Way to do it yourself!

Good news / Bad news about Euro mounts:
Good news is I am starting to get the hang of these and they are looking good.
Bad news is a lot of friends and family are wanting me to do there heads like this. I am working on my 3rd one so far this year, and still have at least 3 more to do. Normally I wouldn't mind, but I am working like crazy trying to get our house finished and moved in. I just don't have the time to mess with them.
Next year I am going to start charging a little $ to do them.

You can borrow my large deer head cooking pot if you need to. I am going to finish another one today, I cooked it yesterday.
