I know a young man that just bought a lab back in july, he wants to get into bird hunting, but not this year. The questions is if he walks with me don't carrying a firearm does he need a hunting license? I'm aware he needs hunter orange, this is just to get the dog out and aware of what he is doing.

I'd say no but I'm no CO either. He's not activly huning or attempting to "take" an animal. He wouldn't need a fishing licese if he were walking along the lake.

It would be best to check with your local conservation officer for confirmation. However, you should have no problem with your "sidekick" as long as he is not carrying a firearm. For instance, I've guided many upland hunts were a child comes along. They are required to sign in as a spectator on most preserves, but no license is required. If your friend seems to enjoy the sport with his Lab, I highly recommend he completes hunter education and obtains the proper license(s). If you ever want to come up to Bloomington/Martinsville area, just PM me and I'll be glad to hook up with y'all. For the most part, I'll have my dogs on birds most every week through at least March depending on the cover. Good Luck!
