I went to a couple of potential spots last night to do some howling, just to see if I could get a reply. Being new to coyote hunting/calling I really didnt think I would have any luck on my calling.
First place was out at my buddys house, dense woods and thickets surrounded by crop fields. No-Go...not a peep.
Second place was out at my mothers property. River running behind her place with a woods on one side, fields on the other side of the woods. Sat down and gave a couple challenge howls (to the best of my ability anyway) and sat for several minutes...nothing. Decided to just sit a while and listen. Wasnt long...off to the west I heard a neighbors cows start to bawl. I knew something had to be up...so I ripped off another challenge howl towards the west. WOW...what sounded like a large pack just absolutely lit up the whole countryside!
they carried on for several minutes then went silent...so I ripped off another challenge howl...low and behold, ANOTHER (smaller) pack off to the east...and close! Then things really got interesting...the pack from the west didnt like this crap at all...the next time I heard from them they were straight behind the house and man were they tearin it up. The pack from the east was a much smaller pack, and Im thinkin they must have turned tail and run cause I didnt hear anything else from them. The pack from the west...I didnt think they were ever gonna shut up...lol.
Im deffinately hooked...and this really has my confidence level up concering my calling now. Didnt fire a shot, or see a single yote...but that ws an absolute blast! And to make matters even beter I have four custom calls on the way that Im getting in a trade from a call maker out in CA.
