Anyone ever experience this w/ their dogs? My pup got acouple big sores on his muzzle last weekend. I had a fire going outside the day before and thought he got burnt. Then on Wednesday my lab ended up w/ circular sores on his muzzle. I took the pup to the vet on Thurs. and they did a scrap. Vet said it wasn't mange (I figured as much) and that there was some infection. I told him all 3 of my dog have it now and that they had to have passed it to eachother. I never really got an answer as to what it was but they gave antibiotics for the dogs. After doing some research this morning I found out about Blastomycosis. It seems that it's most prevalent in the midwest, sandy soils, river bottoms, and near water. My house fits that criteria perfectly. It also read that dogs pick up the spores from diggin in the ground, which all 3 of my dogs are constantly out in field behind the house diggin for moles.
Does anyone know of any other "tell-tell" signs of Blastomycosis besides sores on the body? I'm taking them to a different vet on Monday and hopefully will get an answer on what they picked-up.

Problem is findin out what's wrong! I've been to 4 different vets in my lifetime and haven't liked a single one of 'em yet! They give me antibiotics for the dogs but don't know what's wrong w/ 'em. Antibiotics does not treat everything.

Sounds like what my neighbor's dog had and they dang near lost her.. It was some sort of a fungus from the soil. The dog loved to dig..
The stuff got into her eyes and she is now blind in one eye and can barely see out of the other.
It cost them some major dollars to get her cured.
Catching it early can help..
Good luck and keep us informed..

Got the lab to the vet this afternoon...........for once I think I've found one that's worth goin back to. He said there's nothing to worry about. He said that they've just came into contact w/ something or have had an allergic reaction to some sort of sting. He said if they would have contracted Blastomycosis that they would be in much worse shape already and would be showing symptoms. The vet said he would do a "biopsy" of the area and send it to a pathologist if it would make me feel better but he said he saw no reason to spend the extra $$$$. He said to give them some Benadryl and all would well.
Big relief for me..........now I can get back to huntin!

Hopefully I can offer some encouragement here tobias. I thought my pointers had some similar symptoms after guiding some heavy hunts last year and was also worried it my be the dreaded 'Blasto." I took them to my vet and the first question he asked was whether they had lost their appetite. They had not - matter of fact they were eating like a couple of horses. He said this was the primary symptom - that most dogs with blasto won't eat for days even weeks. He suggested letting them rest and make sure their water (and food) were fresh every day. I was mainly concerned because of eye and mouth irritations and steady hacking coughs. Within a week their were back to normal and hunting just fine. Wish ya the best!

Thanks HIGHCOTTONGUIDE! My dogs a perfectely fine except for the sores/lesions on their muzzles. The leasons look much like the ones I've seen pics of on dogs w/ Blasto. My dogs haven't lost their appetites at all, and other than the lesions seem fine. When you read what happens to MOST dogs that contract "blasto," it sure makes you jumpy when all 3 of your dogs show ANY symptoms.
