I have been pretty pumped about yote hunting this year. The deer and turkey have not been wanting to co-operate so I figured I would try to tame my blood thirst for yotes yesterday evening. I set-up in a hay field sitting on the side of a hill facing a wood lot and a grassy marsh. I know the yotes are around 'cause the farmer has been seeing them almost every day. I begin with bird distress, nothing. Try ki-yi, nothing. Lone/ locating howl, the woods comes to life with a pack of yotes howling back at me! I wait for them to stop and I hit 'em with a challenge howl, nothing. I wait about 3-4 minutes after the challenge and give 'em the ole ki- yi and I really get into it like I just got my ass whooped by another yote. Instantly I see movement along a fence row headed my way. Then behind it I see more movemnt! They are yotes and I notice the second one almost looks black at a distance. I move around to get a better postion on them and they hang up 150 yards away behind a tree. I hit 'em with a ki-yi and here they come. The darker one gets with in 80 yards and sees me sitting on the hillside but can't make out what I am. He stops and looks right at me.., BANG FLOP! One dead yote. Immmediately after the shot the second dog kicks in the sfter burners and heads out. I get on the ki-yi's as fast as aI could and the next thing I know the other one turned and came back. When it hit about 70 yards out I stopped it with a bark and BANG-FLOP! First dogs called in this year and first double! I hope it is going to be a good year.
The dark dog was a 30 pound male and the other a 23 pound female.
