On Sunday my wife and I rode our bikes around the KANKAKEE game preserve. The work that was needed on the Kankakee river side appears to be complete however there is still some more work needed on the Yellow river spillway to complete the repairs. They have drained the place down to the lowest level I have ever seen. There is a large hole in the first unit spillway that has not been repaired (probably left over damage from the spring flood). There is some water here and there and we saw approx. 600-700 ducks (mostly teal)and about 60 geese. There are no boats or blind markers so it appears they will not hunt it at all this year unless there is a walk-in later in the season. The Gumz unit refuge is still being worked on and I didn't see much if any progress in picking the crops. This would be a great time if the state has the time and money to hire a bulldozer to clear out the areas around the duck blinds and the pathways leading out to them. maybe create some new open areas for blinds. As far as opener goes for us up here there are a fair number of ducks mostly woodies and some mallards around. The geese are roosting on open pastures and lawns in town. GOOD LUCK TO ALL.

Status of Kankakee FWA projectShare Wed at 11:07am The construction occurring at Kankakee FWA is moving along as scheduled. The installation of new sheet piling across from the second unit spillway was completed last week. The crews are now focusing on completing the inlet structure rehab. A confer dam is in place prohibiting any water from entering the property. The construction site has been dewatered and concrete should be poured this week. All the materials for the project have been delivered and are now starting to be installed. Current completion date is expected around the 15th of November. Once the work is completed, the marsh will have to be refilled with water. This process may take up to an additional two weeks depending on the water available in the Yellow River. Currently water is being held in the second and third units, for the waterfowl to utilize. Water levels have already dropped over 16 inches across the property and are expected to drop more if the rivers continue to stay as low as they are. Currently the property is holding about 2500 ducks and 500 geese. There is no waterfowl hunting at Kankakee FWA until the middle of November. The date will be determined later once construction is completed and/or the crops harvested.
