The younger generation land owner just dont like people on their land like the older generation land owners. 15 years ago land owners use to tell me to kill deer and leave them lay. they were tearing up their crops. they have since died off and the new land owners wont let people hunt. this is 90 percent of the time in the area where I live. I use to have over 5000 acres in crawford county to hunt, now I have Less than 200. Plus now people are leasing, why let someone hunt free when someone will pay for it? Not me but someone will.

Yeah that is another problem Im running into, I tried to lease some land but with the economy the way it is I cant afford to give much. (really cant afford any) The land leases are outrageous, Lady had 18 acres mostly field and wanted 2000 just for early archery season, wanted 2500 for gun !!! 2500 dollars for what 2 weeks. Others wanted 4 and 5 thousand year and wanted long term leases, plus money up front for the entire lease. I just cant do it guess I will have to hunt public until I can buy my own land. Thanks for your insight, I have heard more times than not that old timers used to say kill em and leave em lay, not anymore.

Yep,I would go to canada, and have a chance at a big deer for that kind of money. Was 3600 last year 4600 could take around a 160 plus deer for what they want and probibly wouldnt see anything. Better off going to powder plant on their hunt, know people who have taken 150 class deer in there last 2 years. It sucks ,but I know how you feel. Is Danny your Dad?

Danny is my uncle, my dads name is Randy. You know them ? Danny hunts with his brother a lot (Larry) he also has a nice cabin in English about a block from the Hoosier National Forest. I have tried to get drawn for a few different Military hunts only been drawn for Atterbury, Crane, and Big Oaks. Never saw one deer in the hunting area all kinds looking at me from the across the road in the restricted areas.

I would agree with you there I would of chose to send my kids to college too. If I had the money I would of bought myself some private land also. Economy sux and we live on one income so thats prolly out of the question anytime soon ! Hence the reason I was curious if ppl were having problems getting "permission" onto private land and not asking "where to buy". Guess Im just not that lucky to have expendable money.

State land is where I hunt.Henryville Forest , harrison county forest hwy 62, patoka lake area.
Ive killed a few decent bucks on state land, prob, bigger than most on private. just gotta be in the right place at the right time. This year sucks though, someone put sticks of deoderant out in the woods where Mt son in law and myself hunt. Someone else set cams out this year where we hunt,I figure its someone who just gun hunts. Was seeing deer every day ,now havent seen a deer for 8 days. Thats the only downfall of state land
ive killed a few

Yeah I here you, I am just starting to hunt the Henryville forestry myself, havent really found a spot as of yet, I need to invest a lil more time in scoutin, but didnt realize I was going to lose my private spot this year so I am gettin a late start on everything. I haev seen a lot of deer sign in the few spots I have looked at there in Henryville but havent seen the deer. I hope to get to invest a day or two this week while the weather is nice to scout out a spot for the upcoming weekend. I hunted a lot at Deam Lake in Borden but they are still chargin a gate fee becuz of the new Horse Campgrounds they put in, and I didnt buy a pass this yr, 5 dollars a day just to hunt an already over ran area is just silly to me when there are so many other forestry and public land that doesnt charge to get thru the gate. I can see payin if I was camping or had horses but I only hunt in there, I dont mind payin the gate fee but when the sign says the park closes in Septemeber and the website says the same thing I dont feel like I should have to continue to pay it just cuz they opened a horse campground. I might be rantin over a silly 5 bucks but its just he principal lol.

I guess I need a refresher course in "smooth" I keep runnin into landowners that either love to watch the deer and turkeys or guys that flat out dont want anyone to step foot on therir property, Oh and the I will lease it to u for a couple grand a yr guys. No real nice people anymore like I used to run into. I have meet a few nice farmers but they already got guys hunting there. I got a few new prospects Im going to check into this week so maybe I can turn on the smoothness and get some access. Thanks for your post and good luck this season

hey jeremy, here's' a tip, plat books help, buy them at your county court house..it pays to know the land owner by his name(what he owns too) and his neighbor too!( do not crowd the owner by getting too close, step away from the door) also ask to hunt for a just for a day or two. its all about the owner to get to know you!!, i just got permission to hunt just for a couple days, on a scout trip there,i lost my cell phone , went to the land owner house to borrow his cell phone to help find mine cell, i got lucky and found it, now the owner says "go ahead and hunt and you can park by the old truck in back, and i don't even have to call the owner to hunt..keep trying and good luck!!....a guy needs a good place to hunt!!!!......turkey scout

Thanks Turkey scout, I appreciate the advice I been trying to find plat maps thru an online search but most of them I am locating are so old or dont have the info I need, I forgot about just going to the court house after them. I think that is one of my down falls lately I am so eager to find a spot being its already in the season and I havent found a spot I am giving up on all the prep work and may even be coming off a lil pushy at times. I think I will have a lot more luck if I just back off a lil and put in the added time in the prep work, then go in as if I should have been to begin with. I just hate the fact I have lost 2 major huting spots I have been hunting for years and I really dont like going back to the over crowded and vast areas of public hunting land especially since Firearms season is already barkin at the door and I have no idea where to hunt. Thanks again for the help and I will keep u posted if I have any luck, good luck at ur knew spot Im Jealous lmao.

you are welcome jeremy, i know how you feel , i lost my favorite hunting spot to leasing(320 acres), all those scouting trips, hunting without seeing deer , it takes time to figure it all out, then i start having success, then lose the property to leasing is a bummer.....i"m hunting the next property over, but it doesn't have the best habitat......we have no acorns this year,so its been a slow archery season for me and my grandson,.......good luck...turkey scout

The one farm that I am hunting on with my uncle this year has standing corn fields everywhere so its makin it hard for early season and the talk is they arent plannin to cut it til after gun season ! There is one clover field and a turnip patch that I have been tryin to hunt over in the evenings but I havent seen much, one 9 point my uncle missed is about the only buck we have seen, and some small does. But atleast Im hunting I guess. They planted the corn damn near right to the woods so if the deer arent standing on the 4 wheeler trail u cant see them lol. There is more deer sign along that corn field then I have seen iup there in the years b4 when I got to hunt up there but Im just not seein the deer, they have no real reason to leave that corn field they can practically live in there the entire deer season and with them not cuttin it til after gun season Im not sure how it will effect the rut up there.
