I'm a pretty new hunter and have a license question that came up this morning. I was bow hunting up north and had two does standing 20 yards from my stand broadside. They just sat and started at me. Let me stand up, zip and unzip my coat, make a phone call, and snap a picture with the Iphone all the while not moving.
I did not shoot her because I did not have a doe tag. I only have purchased a $24 hunting license. My hunting buddy who has a lifetime license thinks that I can take either a doe OR a buck with the $24 license and if I take a doe, then I would only then have to purchase a bonus anterless tag to take any more does. Is this true? Can I simply shoot 1 doe and 1 buck on a $24 license or do I need to purchase one $24 license and an additional bonus anterless license to take a doe? Clarification would be appreciated thanks fellas.

Best to ask the CO on here.
I have a Lifetime License so I really don’t worry about which license is which but here is what the Guide says:
DEER SEASON
Archery Season
TYPE LICENSE(S) REQUIRED
2 Archery
BAG LIMIT
2 antlerless deer (one per license) OR 1 antlerless deer and 1 antlered (one per license)
To me that means it would not matter which archery tag you used and on what first.
Anyone else???

an archery tag is good for either sex until you take a buck, then its only good for a doe. besides additional lic were only 15 after the first one

Right. Archery tag is either sex. If you take a doe with it you can get another archery tag and kill a buck or doe with the 2nd license, but if you take a doe with the 2nd license, you can't buck hunt with a bow anymore.
Best to have an archery tag and a bonus antlerless tag in my opinion if you're wanting to take multiple deer. Put first doe on first archery tag, then get another archery tag and use it soley for a buck. If you get another doe, just use bonus tag.
Man I hate talking about tags LOL.

I think I would forego any "additional" archery tags. I'd buy the archery tag and a bonus tag . I'd use the archery tag strictly for a buck. The bonus tag would be for a doe. Then my next buy would be the SECOND bonus tag for $15. If one bought two archery tags and then the bonus tag it would be $72. If one bought an archery tag, the first bonus tag and the second bonus tag then it would be $63. $9 saved is $9 saved... Us fixed income fellers have to watch our pennies.

Yea, in theory that's great Woody lol. However, I did that 2 years ago I think it was and ended up without an antlerless tag in muzzleloader season because I'd reached my county quota. 2 does in early archery and 1 in firearms. If I'd have checked in a doe on my archery license I would have had that bonus tag when muzzy came around. Live and learn. Of course, I have a lifetime license lol, but it still works the same minus the cash.

MAN that really stinks because I had two shooter does 20 yards from my stand who did not move. Could've had my pick. I should've done my research and asked that question sooner. Thank though guys. Now I know.
Does the same hold true for shotgun season?

Nope. A firearm tag is buck only. You have to have an anterless tag to kill a doe then.

We really need license restructure. Since there is only 1 buck we should change to 1 buck tag good for any weapon then allow an antlerless quota for each weapon/season. That would clear things up. If we ever go back to an archery buck and gun buck they could just add the archery buck to the list.

By the way, congrats on being in the place the deer were. That's the biggest hurdle, the rest is a piece of cake. Good luck.
