here's a question for you guys? does the size of a deers feet have any indication how big a deer might be in weight . ? i have taken some deer in the 180# to 200# field dress and there hooves seem to be normal in size for thier body ,while scouting near corn and soybean fields and while the ground is soft, i see much bigger tracks than i have ever taken...does this mean there is bigger deer in weight out there???.....turkey scout

In my experience, track size can serve as a rough guide. Big old does can fool you, but generally, those huge, blunt tracks belong to a buck. If you have a series of tracks, like in snow or a muddy trail, what will tell you more is how far apart the tracks are from side to side. When you see good tracks that are spaced farther apart than usual, that obviously means that the legs are farther apart because there is bigger body between them. Does and smaller deer leave tracks that are more in a straight line.
If you ever get to read about the Benoit family from Maine, they have fascinating insights on tracking deer.
Of course, we have seen plenty of deer on this forum that carried monster racks in spite of being fairly small in body.
