Not sure who gets to pocket the money but someone there makes a bundle on these hunts. If I remember right they allow 375 hunters in each hunt so thats around 8k or more for each hunt, take that times the number of hunts they have and someone does alright.
The only security I saw while hunting there was at the gate and the food shack was run by local high school cheerleaders and their parents. They video was run by Purdue grads and the check in was done by DNR. h.h.

You made a contractual agreement when you filled out your paper work and sent it in. No reason to be upset with the "Government". They weren't the @ssclowns who ruined hunting privileges. HH, how do you think they pay for the overtime spent for all the extra guards at the gate as well as managing the wildlife here. Nobody is getting rich.

Great ;D with all of you not going back, maybe I can get drawn next year. I average a about 1 deer in three trips. that is better than my usual spot. The last time I went there was a huge flock of turkeys above where I set up. It was interesting that AM. As they say in the intro video there is a lot to see besides the deer. I hope they make life miserable for the offenders. I would pat $80 if I could hunt 2 days in a row.

yep the whole situation sucks. I have no other hunting area, I am active duty stationed at Crane with no other area to hunt, I tried the Hoosier NF, that was dangerous.

Well I would say it is a done deal. I work at crane and just got an email that was sent to the people on base saying if you hunt and have stands out you need to go get them down. I don't think they would tell us that if they thought they were going to let people hunt there.

Another reason I wont hunt there any more is you guys who have payed your $40.00 to hunt wont get it back. They can cancel the hunts at any time and you are S.O.L. h.h. It's been 30 years since I hunted at Crane. You mean they charge to hunt up there? The last time I hunted there, one only had to get drawn to hunt and there was no charge. What Happened??

I thought that the money you sent to crane after notification of being drawn was for a security check. You had to pay someone to tell them that you were not a terrorist or a felon.

Seems like those few bad apples are at every reduction hunt, if they could just keep from doing something really stupid..

The HNF is huge so you just got to know where to hunt. Get in there really deep and you'll get away from most of the folks there. My two best friends bot took nice bucks out of there on Sunday - both were 9 pointers and one of them had a huge drop tine.

I wasn't necessarily talking about deep off the road as much as deep down the roads into the forest. Those roads go really far in there and you would be surprised by how many people want to drive in 2 miles or so and pull off to hunt.

I've worked and hunted at Crane for 23 years. I started the petition that got the attention needed to stop NR from segregating mushroom hunters and bow hunters under Lynn Andrews effectively cutting the available hunting area in half. I'm friends with Steve Andrews - NR head - and others that run the show. I'm telling you the ATV rumor is just that - a rumor. There is no single incident involving either an employee or state hunter that has precipitated this hunt cancellation.
I e-mailed CDR Prosuniak and asked him how employees can retrieve stands because Bob and I both have stands out and there must be others in the same boat. Five minutes later he put out the basewide e-mail telling everyone they can use the log in/log out system under scouting until 12 December to remove their stands.
There are a number of factors in play, but the only one you guys need to know is there are security issues and command is reigning in everything that's not mission essential right now. When risk outweighs outcome decisions must be made. I doubt there will be any hunting at Crane for the remainder of this year. As for next year, no one knows.
My opinion on ATVs is that some people need them to hunt and/or do any of a number of things we take for granted. Bob is my friend and I stand by him. It will take him all day to get his stands out - piece at a time - without help because no ATVs are going anywhere right now. I've offered to help him, not cut him down or call him lazy. He hunts as hard as anyone I know and has my full respect. People can walk in on your hunt and ruin it just as easily as riding in on an ATV. I chose to leave mine at home, but respect other people's rights - some day someone will take away something you need and then you will understand.
Don't mean to sound preachy on my first post on this site, but apparently there are employees on here talking without first hand knowledge. Before you post, don't guess, don't propogate rumors, don't believe everything you hear, chill out and trust the people that serve our country in their career of choice.

Sorry, but no one said anything about Bobby Hardwick. If you would read the whole thread you would know that.

I heard the Commander was sick and tired of receiving phone calls from animal rights activist so he suspended the hunts, thats the word I am getting from someone who works on base.

Sounds like a few people owe handicapped hunters or any hunters for that matter that use ATV's an apology. I serious doubt one will be forthcoming but nevertheless it's owed.
