My long time hunting buddy and I set up in a pasture on opening day. We had an audience of 40 or so 500 pound feeder calves. The first pair came in and landed between us and the cattle, who were lined up at the edge of the decoys. I guess they were looking at the two giant clumps of grass that weren't there yesterday. The geese were flushed, I had to wait for the bird on my side to clear the cattle. 2 shots fired, two geese down, the cattle don't even flinch. The next group flaired as the cattle are in the spread licking the flocked heads. After moving them off a dozen times we finally started killing birds. We ended up with 10 geese and a neat bonus of two bands and a good story to tell about herd animal behavior.

Nice job. I have hunted around horses and cattle and the gun shots don't seem to bother them.

We went back to the same pasture this morning, the cattle won. Once set up we kept them away from the decoys. When we heard geese and closed our blinds, the race was on. The calves moved into the decoy spread licking and knocking over decoys. They scared off 4 or 5 flocks like that.
