I am going to make a deer hanging cooler in my garage, i have a chest freezer in the basement that i am going to use my plan is to take the lid off the chest freezer and build a extension on top of it to make it taller so i can hang a deer with out quartering it. my question is this what do you think the best/cheapest insulation to use for this project ? as of Aug 27 after 18yrs i am being laid off so money has now become very tight for me

My initial response would be the rigid foam board that you find installed around foundations.

I agree use rigid foam, you can get 4x8 sheets 2'' thick and tape all your seams and this will do the trick. use the freezer and make a walk in with it. Happen to have a few sheets in the shed if you're interested. maybe 5 0r six will let go cheap.

I would suspect the compressor in that freezer wouldn't last to long. It's going to work so hard once the lid is off and it has to cool that additional space.

You can get the foam board at Menards for 8 - 12.00 a sheet depending on what R value you buy. Add a small fan inside will help with circulation. h.h.

The industry standard for walk-in coolers is 4" foam insulation.

I saw on another site where a guy was going to use a window air conditioner to basically cool a closet type cooling room to hang deer in.
You HVAC guys correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't a window unit just put out about 55 degree air? If so, I don't think I would let a deer hang very long in 55 degrees..

Window AC is OK when used with one of these... http://www.whitetailcooling.com./
