Curious as to what others like to use for squirrel hunting. Even though any legal firearm is permissable, I've never been able to bring myself to shoot my .243 up through the tree tops. I know that I'd hit the squirrel, but there just might be some pass through.
I typically like a .22 rifle, but I've recently scoped a Ruger Mk. III that I'll likely try this year. parson

Savage .17 HMR with a 3-9x40 scope, Hornaday rounds with the polymer tip. I have developed this thing for picking an eyeball or nostril instead of just the head.

Later on when the skeeter population is down, Rem. 513T, Rem. 40X, Rem. 541X, using Wally World Federals', always go for the head shots. Get kinky with a Win. 67, 3x9 with Remington Sub Sonics. Can hear the slug hit the head. Quit the shotgun thing years ago, not much sport in it, expensive ammo, noisy.

The three gun I like to use for Squirrel Hunting:
1. My CZ Model 452 American Classic in .22 LR. with scope. 2. My Stoeger S/S .410 Model "Uplander" 3. My Browning Gold 20 gauge
When I lived in Indiana I also used my Kimber .22 Hornet with 50 grain (reduced loads), and my Winchester Model 43 bolt action in .25-20. Both scopesighted. I can't use centerfire rifle loads for Squirrels here in Ky. other than shotgun shells.

Ruger 10/22 with a red dot scope and hodgpodge ammo. No super sniper here, just a good excuse to get the kids out there and scout the woods for October...

Normally I use my Ruger Red Label 20ga just to make my buddy Jack mad, but I've been using my recurve so far this year. Don't think I'll break out the guns this time.

Ruger 10/22 with a 4x Leupy.
Accidentally grabbed dads gun Saturday afternoon .... Remington 552 BDL I bought him a few years ago because he just had to have a gun that would shoot shorts. He doesnt shoot shorts anymore though because I had one blow up on me this year while sighting his gun in. Maybe "blowing up" is a bit drastic .... not really much bang from a short. Action didnt close all the way from one round to the next but it fired anyway. Blew the side of the case out the action.

I had the same thing happen to me about 4 years ago, I was sighting in an old bolt action with shorts and the thing popped on me. Put a few pieced of brass in my forehead even. I was glad I had on safety glasses. Knocked off the site that was glued onto the barrel and busted up the action a bit. The gun has not been been used since.

Didnt seem to hurt the gun at all .... and the bullet actually made it all the way down the barrel. I somehow got hit in the off arm with a piece of shrapnel but it just burned a little.
I have since shot about 50 Federal LR's out of it without issue.

as always my tree rat guns I choose to use on any given day change often all mainly depending on how much cleaning I feel like doing when I get home!!!!
Ruger 10/22 stainless custom with a Simmons 3-9x Ruger 77/17 with Leupoold 2-7x compact Ruger Mark II stainless slab side with silver Aimpoint red dot Ruger Mark II Blued Government Bull Barrel with 2x Burris A pair of Browning Buckmarks - 5.5in. fluted bull barrel and a 10in fluted silhouette model - both with open hooded sights
BUT!!! My all time favorite to use is my 14" T/C Contender pistol in 17 HMR with a 1.5-4x Burris - this thing is awesome!!! I like using a bipod shooting stick and using it as a rest and even as a pseudo buttstock at times. A couple years ago a buddy of mine tried it and popped a crow at over 200 yards with it!!! He had one of his own within a month...LOL

There were two reds and two grays that fell to the Gamo. They have been tearing the pears on the pear tree in my backyard to pieces. Knew that I was going to need something fairly quiet because with the grove of maple and black locust right behind the pear tree one loud noise and I'd be waiting another day. I think the last of the four had finally figured out that something was wrong but chose to sit on one of the maple branches and try to figure it out....figured him self right into the stew pot But when I'm heading to the woods "on back" I'll be carrying the Savage 22...got to get Danf moved first though

I usually take my old Winchester 9422. It will put a CCI short hollowpoint right where it's aimed! Sometimes I take my 1954 Marlin 39 Mountie. I have always been a sucker for the old lever rifles (maybe from watching too much Lone Ranger and Gunsmoke as I grew up).
More and more often these days, I hunt them with my 36 caliber muzzleloader. That can be challenging on greys in the early season!

Wife bought me a Ruger 1022 Target model several years ago.
First auto-loader I ever had that I really liked, bull barrel and all. Not bad to carry with the strap, and a real pleasure to shoot.
It's a tackdriver completely stock, and I think I'll be able to compete against my kid brother's Remington 541 T (that has a "range use only" hair trigger and is the best shooting .22 I've ever shot) when I get around to a trigger job or replacing the stocker with an adjustable.
I use a 3-9x40 on the Ruger.
For later in the season when they're more likely to be on the ground and moving, I still prefer my old Marlin 39M.
Had to replace the original sights with some fiber optics, and even then couldn't do without a scope very well until I played with different eyewear for shooting the bow. Turns out going under-corrected for myopia in the right eye by one full diopter brought the fiber optics back into focus like they were twenty years ago! Fun to be able to take the quick-handling, lightweight old Marlin out again and use open sights!
I usually get a few with the bow every year, but hadn't for the last couple years. Plan to get a few that way again this year.
