I originally posted this on HH.com, but wanted to share here as well as a thought for safety in the woods...
-----------------------------------------------
Went over to get my morning coffee at the BP next to my office building, and asked the gal at the counter if her husband had any luck this weekend, as I knew he had gotten permission on a new woods that had lots of good sign in it and they had seen some nice bucks during bow, but no shot ops...
Story was that he and his two friends got there around 0600 and got into their stands, and as things began to get light enough to see around the area, her husband notices 2 vans, one with a trailer behind it, parked at the end of the field north of the woods their in. His group is the only one who has permission, so he immediately figures there are other hunter/poachers in the woods with them. He had left his cell in his truck, so he got out of his stand and walked back to his next buddy to use his cell to call the landowner and sheriff/ico.
He gets to his buddy's stand to see him already on the ground, and starts to tell him about the vans... his buddy says, "Well I know where they are, and THEY'VE PITCHED TENTS IN THE WOODS!" His buddy had been glassing the woods to the east of his stand, and had begun to see blue and green tents all over the place...
So they walk over to where these tents are located and call out, as they have yet to see any orange anywhere... tent fly on one opens up, and out steps a 10 y.o. kid... they ask what the heck they're doing camping in his friends woods... turns out, IT'S A SCOUT TROOP OUT ON A CAMPOUT!!!
The husband asked the boy who was in charge, and the kid went and woke up the scoutmaster, who appeared a bit shocked to see three adults carrying guns standing there... the scoutmaster maintained they had permission to be in there, but the husband knew this was for camping during the summer and not during the hunting seasons, and told the guy this. He then called the landowner and put him on the phone with the scoutmaster...
After the call, the husband asked the scoutmaster, "Why in the world would you take these kids out in the woods the opening day of deer gun season?" "Well, we thought we could camp here any time and didn't think anyone would mind..."
"You're right about one thing," the husband said, "You didn't think..."
So, their opening weekend was basically hosed, as they figured it would be better to not try and hunt again Sunday and let the woods settle for a week...
Moral of the story... don't just look for orange, but for blue, yellow, green, red and all other possible tent colors..... never know who else is "trooping" around the woods...
