For the 3rd year in a row my son scored on a buck. Hey Dad a Threepeat he says ! lol We had a little malfunction in communication on this deer. It's by far his biggest buck and I think he got a little touch of the fever. We saw the buck walking behind us along a field edge. I grunted with my VECtor grunter and he stops and looks but keeps walking at an angle away from us. As he gets straight behind us I grunt again and he stops and turns and starts walking toward us. He's about 80 yards out, we're hunting from a buddy stand I'm looking around one side of thtree and Jake is aiming at the buck around the other side of the tree. All of a sudden....BOOM...scared the beegeezes outta me, I was NOT expecting him to shoot. I normally talk him through the shot and tell him when to shoot that kind of thing. The buck did a back flip and was down for a couple of seconds then was up and half running/troting away. I saidJake why did you shoot him facing you ?! with a sheepish caught with my hand in the cookie jar look he shrugs his shoulders and says I shot him right in the neck Dad. I said well I hope he's down, that not a good shot. We waited 30 minutes and got down and had an awesome blood trail leading to this nice 8 pointer.

Yep, boys will be boys! Even though he didn't take the best shot, it's still a good deer for him.

EXACTLY what I told him Woody, it could have turned out much differently. I don't think he will do it again.

A well placed neck shot can be very lethal (obviously) just not recommended. Congrats to your son Steve.

Nice Buck! You are a good dad for trying to teach him the right way. Eventually he will get it. I did the same thing as a boy......and my dad did the same as you. I haven't taken another shot like that since. Congrats to you and your boy. You should be proud!!

I've taken several deer with a neck shot, not a bad shot at all. They usually go down and stay down,I'll take a neck shot
