Hunted from daylight to dark Saturday and saw plenty of deer ..... Couldnt convince any of the bigger deer into coming close enough for a shot. Sunday morning was a lot less active than Saturday. Just before 10:00 I decided I was ready to get down and take a break. Right before I started down I look out in the CRP and saw this buck. 100 yards and headed into an area thick enough I might not see him again. I decided it was now or never ...... I knew when I looked at him that there was a very good chance that I had just killed my first 200lb deer ...... but I was pretty shocked when we got him to the scales. 230lbs dressed.

Yes they are.
I had an opportunity to buy some CRP a couple of years ago and passed because it wouldnt be good deer habitat ...... dang was I wrong.
This place is so thick there are deer in it ALL the time. I can see about 30 acres of a 90 acre field and there was a period of 1 hour all day Saturday that I couldnt find at least 1 deer through my binoculars.
Retrieving this deer was the first and only time we have gone into the actual CRP ... we just hunt the edges and leave the deer alone. They bed, chase, feed and just mill around in the stuff. Hopefully as long as we dont enter their "safe" zone they will continue to concentrate there.
I put a tape on the rack yesterday evening and he goes right at 138" ..... biggest 8 I have ever killed.

Conservation Reserve Program ..... stop using cropland and plant trees and natural grasses.
lots of bottom land ground goes this route ... the state pays the landowner "X" number of $$ per acre to enter their land in the CRP program and then plants the trees and grasses. The landowner is not allowed to use the land for anything but recreation for a period of "Y" years ......

Nice head gear on both the buck and the hunter! I am definitely not a fair weather fan ... I support my "Golden Domers" no matter what. I am also a Cowboys fan .... seen my share of tough seasons from both. At least my Cowboys are entertaining to watch this year.
