I think it's funny to read stuff like that. No matter what you say as a hunter there is nothing you can do to get people to change their minds. People that have never hunted don't have a clue what it's like. I've spent all most every saturday of hunting season in the woods with my dad and family since I was 4-5 years old. And I bet half the people that want to fight and say that hunting is bad can't say they spend 5-10 hrs a weekend with their family. It is something that I look forward to sharing with my son and as long as the good Lord allows me to be on this earth I'll enjoy it. Hope everyone has a safe weekend. And I hope everyone gets one. But save the big ones for me...

my reply as posted on the Indianapolis Star website. P.S. I grew up carrying the star from 6th grade. The last day I delivered: the morning I left for college. 7 years, I never missed a day of school either- due to being outside all the time I believe. Here goes: I grew up in Suburban Indianapolis, and by a chance of fate, moved to Angola, IN. The opening day of Shotgun season is pretty much a holiday. Many churches and other community organizations hosts breakfasts that begin at 4:30 AM. Thus, the hunter is not only managing the natural world by keeping whitetails in balance, but also contributing to his or her community. I know all of the deer meat my son and I harvest will be butchered in my garage. After freezing, some will be donated to local food banks. As long as the meat is cooked medium rare, I challenge anyone with an open mind to say beef tastes better,(my family raised angus for 20 plus years in southern Indiana). Any "warm and fuzzy" discussion about deer not deserving to die is ridiculous. Heve you ever seen what a coyote will do to a deer- as a group they will run the animal to exhaustion, then drag it down, and rip its guts out and begin to eat it while "bambi" is still alive. The human hunter is much more efficient and kind to an animal that has evolved into a walking nose that smells 1000 times better than a human. Unlike sports where humans are the only participants, there is no trace of hormones, or steroids. The sport is not in "winning, or losing", but the experience. It is true sport testing yourself against the elements, nature, even against yourself. While playing college tennis on teh southside at UIndy, I thought hitting an 100 plus mile an hour ace was exciting. I still play tennis, but watching a deer walk within shooting range with my eyelashes frozen, and my breath fogging the air in front of me- now that is the most exciting experince I've had in life beyond becoming a father. You can bet I'll be testing myself again tomorrow morning. Scott Hottell, Angola, IN

For all I care the anti-hunters can pound sand. They would n'tbe here to gripe if their ancestors..cavemen did not hunt. Each year deer are a major cause of all traffic accidents. If my memorie serves correct, last year there were over 100 fatalities nationwide (human, not deer). And if my memory, serves correctly statewide there were over 1000 vehicle/deer accidents. Hmmmm, lets do away with hunting therefore take food away from food banks, deplete quality family time, cause an increase in car/deer accidents (raising insurance costs and fatalities. We can all eat lettuce, well at least till someone feels sorry for the poor plant. Great idea..right.

You stop hunting and the economy falls on its face. These anti people are just part of the "whats happened to this world" statement.

It's obvious some of the posters have never hit a deer on the interstate with their pregnant wife in the car and had an antler break off in the windshield and get sprayed with glass as the side mirror came through the side window.
I have.
