Birds weren't gobbling much today where I was. We found one around 8:30, got about 100 yards from him, and set up. Didn't take long for him to get close. He was about 30 yards away when I spotted him after he thunder gobbled, but I had my gun facing just to the left of him and I couldn't move. He went behind a tree so I made my move only to hear something crashing in the woods to the left of me. Low and behold here comes another hunter not 20 yards away from me. I thought the bird was long gone. I whistled at the other hunter and he saw me waving him off, so what does he do? You guessed it, he sat down 20 yards away from me and started calling. I couldn't believe it, he actually sat down that close to me. I was on public ground, but I would have shown some courtesy and walked away. I told my hunting partner lets just walk the other way, I give up, but he talked me out of it. Next thing I know, I hear him gobbled again down at the bottom of a ravine, so we walked around to cut him off, and called him in again. Ended up being about a 30 yard shot and he dropped. The End. ;D ![](http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j297/landonm10/2009turkey-2.jpg)

"Almost gave up.."
Patience, persistence and perseverance pays off...
Congratulations..
Too bad you did not have a chance to show the other "hunter" your bird. That is wild beyond belief that someone would do that..
PS.. Cool picture. You need to blow that one up and frame it..

I like that picture. Reminds me of where I hunt w/the rock bottem creek. But my land is private. Congrats on the bird.

I really wanted to go over there and shove it in his face, but my better judgment got to me. The pic was taken with a camcorder so it's really grainy if you blow it up. I forgot to bring my camera, but we got the whole thing on film.

congrats on the fine bird. Maybe he thought that the best thing to do was to try and get out of sight, but calling doesn't make any sense. If the bird hadn't already spooked him sitting down once he realized that you were there may have been his way of trying to not mess you up.

I won't even pull into one of the pull-off parking lots to hunt an area if there's already a truck there, let alone pull a stunt like that. On public land you're going to cross paths with other hunters, but to drop down and call is way over the line IMO.
Congrats on your bird, that's great that you got him afterall!

I started on private land which is surrounded by public. I've got 220 acres to hunt on with a lake in the middle which is in a valley. The only bird we heard all day was on public land, go figure.

Sounds like it all worked out for you, public land, other hunters or not. Congrats!
