Sunday mornng 8:30 am I finally capitalized on killing my first wild turkey. 13.9 lbs, 4" beard and .5 spurs. I was hunting alone and got to my spot 1/2 hour before sunrise, sitting behind a log pile from a recent widening of a gas pipeline easment. The morning started with site of wood ducks, crows and the sounds of a gobbles fillig the air. I noticed this jake and 2 others with my binocular about 300 yards away feeding in a harvested soy bean field and made a couple of calls to let them hear me and see the jake decoy and hen decoy I placed 10 yards to my left in a cut corn field. The birds noticed the call and began slowly feeding toward my decoy set up. I continued to make calls every 10-15 minutes despite losing track of the Jakes heading my way. Eventually I noticed the birds again about 60 yards away when they cleared the briar patch blocking my view. The birds went past wide of the decoys about 30 yards out as I watched and remained calm, they continued past the set up another 20 yards left of the decoys before turning around and headed back toward the set up. The gun was up and as the first two jakes filled my shooting lane, the last one presented me with a perfect shot as he looked around the tree. The temptation to kill my first wild turkey overwhelmed me and the bird rolled as the Winchester 1300 12 guage pump loaded with Remington Max load 6 shot broke the silence. The bird was at 15 yards and went down as the other two Jakes ran away. The big gobbler I missed opening day was forgotten and the rest of Sunday was spent with a smile on my face.

Congrats Mel! I gotta ask, what call were you using? Beautiful box call I picked up from Felix Calls, worked like a charm, had numerous birds respond to the little **** hen, as I fondly refer to it.....

There's only a handful of calls out there, but I think yours was by far the best sounding one I've made yet. Just wish I had more time to work on calls...... Congrats again!

Wow.....another smile went across my face.
I had no idea Dan, wish I would have had the box call in the picture, it's the only call I currently own, looking to get a mouth call for fall season.
