I believe that the windier it gets the less deer that you will see.. Now the question is, how much of the reduced deer observation rates as the wind speed increases is due to actual less deer movement and how much is due to the hunters not being able to see deer as well when the forest is "moving" more from increased wind speed? Probably a combination of both. But it is interesting that deer and especially buck sightings increase in Very Strong winds. What is your theory on that??

Under very strong winding conditions bucks will head to open fields alot of times to bed and spent time this way the see farther since the hearing and sense of smell is somoe what messed up. also several hunters like myself like to stalk during strong wind conditions. With that does are usually in a group and more eyes looking and watching for danger, where as bucks are loners during hunting season and easier to slip up on.

I have seen & taken some big ole hoggy bucks in very windy conditions "only during the rut". Outside of the rut, these same conditions in my experience cause all of the deer to bed down during shooting hours. I am not a biologist by any means, but with my high wind bed down theory I think that it makes finding a doe in heat easier for the bucks since the does are bedded down & not moving around during daylight hours.

I would have to agree with Cday and you Woody. One reason is that everything is moving giving the deer a better chance at blending into any cover. Just like every other game species, heavy winds inhibit their ability to detect danger so they naturally keep low and get the best vantage. The leeward edges where they can see accross the field and hopefully detect danger coming from the cover downwind. That has been my theory on very windy days.

TS that was many moons ago. I'm way past that now. Went out this afternoon, in my tree a little after 3 and at 3:50 had two small does walk under me. Heard another coming and got ready for a big doe and here comes a nice bodied small (12-13 inch) 8 pointer. let him walk and then hear another and it is a button buck. Those big does know when you are after them. Now back to the subject, the wind was howling out of the N.W. and intermitant rain.
