I heard from a reliable source that a turkey hunter was shot on JPG ( Big Oaks ) a day or two ago. He was hit in the lower back, could still move, and was taken to an access road big enough to land a chopper. That's all I know. Anyone hear anything?

Wow, that's scary. I hope he's ok. I hunted down there in '06 and '07. Never saw another hunter in our section. I can't remember, do they only allow two men per section?

no it's not only 2 per section, but it is about half as many as deer hunters per section.

Supposedly a young teenager shot his grandfather while hunting down there. Not sure if it was during the yute season or what. As of yet, I don't know anything else about it but will post when I do....

You correct buster, I haven't talked to the family to see how the grandfather is doing but I know he is going to make, they air lifted him to Cinncy. Not sure how the shooting actually happened just hope the young man is handling it well, and keeping the family in our thoughts.

Turkey Hunter accidentally shot by Grandson
Ricky Wright, 55, of Eaton was turkey hunting with his grandson Robert Lott, 13 of Farmland in Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge the morning of Sunday April 26, 2009. When the pair were leaving the forest they heard some turkeys close to them, so they stopped in an attempt to call the birds in. Because they sat down hurriedly, Robert’s gun, a 12 gauge Ithaca Shotgun, was laying in such a way that he had to bring the gun across his grandfathers back to get into position. As he brought it across his back Robert accidentally pulled the trigger, shooting his grandfather in the lower back.
Ricky was treated at the scene and then airlifted to University of Cincinnati Hospital. Ricky was conscious and alert at the scene.
Robert Lott had taken Hunter Education at the Farmland Conservation Club and had owned the firearm for over a year. The investigation is still ongoing to determine if charges will be filed.
Indiana Conservation Officer Corporal Andy Crozier was assisted by Indiana State Police, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department and Kings’ Daughters’ Hospital EMS.

How terrible for both of them. Obviously multiple basic firearms safety violations there - hard way to learn why they are in place. He didn't HAVE to bring it across his back, there is always another way, let alone trigger discipline etc.
